As a uniformed member of the Armed Forces, mine is a unique position of being able to share such a meaningful gift in an official capacity that bears great depth and meaning far beyond similar civilian cultural exchanges.Before being assigned to Yokota Air Base in Japan, I was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. Part of my duties as a trumpeter in the military is to sound “Taps” as part of the full complement of a fallen hero’s military honors. Among the most somber occasions of fulfilling that special privilege was on behalf of a WWII Seaman, Wesley Brown. In 2021, his remains were identified and shipped home to America’s heartland after 80 years of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.Fast forward to August 6 and 9, 2023, shortly after I arrived at my new duty station in Japan. On those dates in 1946, nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I recorded in my journal on the 9th that my walk to work was quite sobering as I realized that my presence there was a direct result of that complicated global conflict. With significant symbolism, Pacific Brass read “Rising Sun” for the first time that day.After nearly 80 years, the post-war occupation has evolved to a thriving partnership most worthy of celebration. This composition “Rising Sun” potently delivers a personalized celebratory gesture from an American Airman to all those communities we serve throughout the glorious “land of the rising sun.”In the music itself, one can picture a dim early dawn with the serene opening of the low brass trio. The musical content is repeated more loudly, with brilliant trumpet interjections as the sun crests over the early horizon. The music morphs and grows; varies and repeats, as it is intended to depict the subtly but rapidly changing beauties of an orange-filled sunrise. At last, the colors fade and the new day has begun, with a full brightness of hope.

Psalm 121 started as a piece for a cappella choir. It was commissioned by conductor Pierre Masse for his ensemble, the Ecclesia Consort, to sing in two performances in 2002. Since this psalm was one of my favoites, it was a great joy to compose this piece. Fast forward to 2022. We have a space station that has been orbiting the Earth since the year 2000, continuously occupied with astronauts and scientists. We have multiple telescopes, surpassing our galaxy, sending photos and information back to Earth. We have rovers on Mars. We are sending civilians into space on privately owned rockets! The future is bright. Adapted melodie for this music is the theme of the art song Star Keeper(Poem by “Gye-seok Takâ€) composed by “Junhee Limâ€. So far, melodic line is concerned, mostly the Korean pentatonic scale “Do re mi so la†is used. The overall framework is an introduction/theme and three variations/cadenza/finale/end. Through the theme, it creates a musical updraft up to the second variation, and in the third variation, a relaxed atmosphere, and then a cadenza singing a conversation between a mother who sings a lullaby and a baby who is enjoying her dream comes out. The figure of the mother is the theme melody played with the G string, and the figure of the child is the cheerful high notes composed of the first five notes of the theme, “Mi Re Do Re Mi.†It then ends with a brilliant finale and a short conclusion. Published by Jean Ahn (A0.949304). Suppose a composer had a glimpse of the first movement of Ravel's trio in a fast forward flash. Then she is left with images. I was trying to organize my impression on Ravel’s trio. The piece uses a loose Sonata form. The first theme and the second theme is somewhat related to Ravel’s, although it is not a direct quotation. The Development is focusing on not only the two themes, but the ornaments from the exposition. The Recapitulation starts in a conventional matter but quickly move onto an improvisatory coda which is a dream-like summarization of all the impressions. The fade out ending suggests that the composer's thought is ongoing.

The Overture A Midsummer Night's Dream is originally composed by the German composer Felix Mendelssohn, who was inspired by reading William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream. It was initially created as a piano piece for duet, intended for enjoyment with his sister Fanny. Notably, Mendelssohn himself later arranged it for orchestra in 1826 when he was just 17 years old.Fast forward 16 years, this piece took an unconventional path to composition. It was commissioned by King Wilhelm IV of Prussia at the time, and the overture became part of a larger work known as Incidental Music, where it was accompanied by other pieces, apart from the overture.The Overture A Midsummer Night's Dream begins with four chords that evoke a gentle breeze, as if beckoning you into the world of fairies, in line with the folklore that claims that on the eve of Midsummer (Walpurgis Night), fairies and witches gather for revelry. It then transitions into the theme of the fairy's fluttering wings, followed by the music of the Fairy King's palace, the lovers' theme, and passages for clowns and hunting scenes. Finally, it returns to the fairies, dancing and disappearing as if carried away by the wind.We have arranged this enchanting piece for a brass ensemble, featuring ten players (3 trumpets, 3 horns, 3 trombones, and 1 tuba). The 1st Trumpet part includes an optional switch to Piccolo Trumpet, but this is purely optional and not mandatory to perform the arrangement.Additionally, please note that the 3rd Trombone part is intended for the Bass Trombone but can also be performed using Euphonium or Tenor Bass Trombone.

Ascher and Paul Williams.Most people hear the intro of this piece and immediately think of Kermit the Frog, strumming his banjo and singing this beautiful little melody. It is one of the very first sheets of music that I went out and purchased at our local music store. I was so excited to learn it! Fast forward many years later (ahem!) and I am so happy to see it entertaining a whole new generation of people. On YouTube, Kermit uploaded a special performance of it in April 2020!I performed it as a duet with a student at a recital and it was a big hit (we even came up with our own choreography to go along with the piece!) This melody is one of those timeless and iconic pieces that will forever live in my heart. I was excited to see that I would be able to share an arrangement I made!My version starts out in the key of A major and offers a simple, more pianistic left hand accompaniment. Smooth, flowing arpeggios accompany most of the piece. The first verse is left to be fairly simple and lets the melody shine. The second verse has more harmony in the right hand and some fills that build on the melody. The key change has more movement and signals the last verse done in a very full, orchestra-like sound. Piacevole Pleasing, pleasant, smiling, playful scampering along without much sense of urgency. Doesn't require advanced technical or reading skills other than being familiar with reading and playing in the key of A flat. It does require the ability to play very evenly though, nothing bumpy in this piece! Level 6. II. AgitatoLike a wildly spinning top that only twice comes to an abrupt stop, the A section pressing forward and unforgiving, the B section playful and light, this needs to be played Allegrissimo which is very fast but with a different character than Presto. It requires a well-developed technique that can handle RH passage work with ease. Level 8, due to the very fast tempo. III. FantasiaStarts very sweet and gentle, softly like a Nocturne - though without the lilting character - but quickly changes character, several times, before developing into a fff coda-like ending which after just a few measures disappears into nothingness. Key changes and chromatic writing as well as unexpected harmonic shifts make this piece potentially not easy to read. However, rhythmically it is uncomplicated, and technically, everything fits the hands very well. For instance, LH arpeggiated accompaniment patterns over more than one octave are always ascending and hardly ever fill the entire measure. What this piece requires is a well-developed sense of flair and an intuitive ability to create drama and suspense, both with touch and timing. Level 8.IV. FugaceNote-wise identical to the first piece, Piacevole, but played much faster, in a fleeting manner, flying away. Needs an extremely light touch. Level 7, due to tempo and the need for subtle shading.

I received an email from Joel Quarrington in 2011 with a request to buy a score and a set of parts to Hylidae … The Tree Frogs (1991) for violin, double bass and piano. He said he would like to perform the work at the next International Society of Bassists convention in Rochester, New York. I told him That is great. But it’s such an old work. Why don’t I write something new for you? He said, How much would a commission cost? I said, Let me write the piece first and if you like it, we can talk about a fee then. I began work on Toccata for Double Bass and Piano in late August and completed it on October 15. I sent Joel the music as a PDF and MIDI file via email. He wrote back, The piece looks really terrific and I have enjoyed listening to it as well, thanks for the midi file. I couldn’t be happier! Toccata is in three movements, fast-slow-fast, with internal ABA ternary forms in the first and last movements - also fast-slow-fast. Moderato … Trio … A tempo. Adagio. Allegro … Trio … Reprise! The first movement begins with a driving dotted-note motif in the double bass accompanied by an insistent sixteenth-note bass-line in the piano left hand and a soaring quarter-note melody in the piano right hand. A Trio follows which features a lyric melody in the double bass … molto cantabile! The double bass returns this time stealing the sixteenth-note bass-line motif from the piano left hand. The double bass pushes the music forward relentlessly and ferociously … holding no prisoners! To add counterpoint to this madness, the piano comes back with the quarter-note melody but in octaves this time. The left hand joins the melee occasionally to push the music forward until it reaches its climax at the conclusion. The second movement, Adagio, is a slow waltz. The mournful tune is delivered by the double bass at first, then it’s passed on to the piano, and it goes back and forth between the two. The third movement is a 6/8 romp, very syncopated and jazzy. The music goes back and forth between the double bass and piano, not unlike when the musicians in a jazz combo trade four’s among each other. An adagio Trio follows. The tune is in the double bass: long descending lines over a languid piano accompaniment. To complete the ABA format, the music from the beginning of this movement returns as a reprise. ENJOY!!! Commissioned by Joel Quarrington for a premiere performance at the 2013 International Society of Bassists Convention at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.

They have performed the Trumpet Quintet version of this composition quite often for numerous weddings and other special occasions. The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (13 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The music is in three movements and looks forward to the fast-slow-fast plan popularized by Vivaldi's concertos. Regis Bookshar thought that it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists, besides trumpet players, could also have the opportunity to play the Allegro movement from Purcell's Sonata for Trumpet, so he has created other arrangements of this selection.
