This composition was inspired by a cruise of the Mediterranean and visits to Italy, Croatia, and Greece. I was struck by the age and endurance of the structures and the history of the region. The hard work and thought that went into the construction of theses incredible buildings that have survived 1000s of years was amazing. I describe my musical style as neo polyphonic. I write each part as a spate melody or counter melody and the harmonization is what occurs naturally as they entwine. They are usually impressionistic in nature reflecting some action or scene. The First movement is my impression of walking on the ancient roman roads. I found them uneven and I I was wobbling all over the place. To me it sounds like a old wagon with different sized wheels going down the road with other traffic. The second movement. Is inspired by the great Cathedrals you find all through Europe. They are huge open and full of history. As you wonder through them you can feel the history and the devotion in them. The third movement evokes the fast ride of a cavalry unit scouting enemy territory and having a skirmish with and enemy then riding off.. It was inspired by all the history of conflict between the countries of the Mediterranean.

If your friends are trying to talk you into doing something you know is wrong, don't just sit there and listen to them. Get up and leave the room, or the party, or the situation. Be true. Be the one. The music isintended to sound bittersweet in nature because it's meant to reflect both of these things.I don't usually try to write in a specific form, as I feel that can hurt the natural flow of how the music wants to develop.However, this piece is indeed in anABAform. Almost all of the thematic material in the piece is written in a major key,but with the goal of sounding a little sad. While writing this, I was heavily influenced by the music of Ennio Morriconeand Dan Forrest. There is a short motive used in the B section of the piece that is similar to a motive used in variousfilm themes. Since I associate this motive with Morricone, and because he is one of my all time favorite composers, Idecided to dedicate this piece to him.

Composer’s Note - Road TripThe inspiration for Road Trip comes from the train commute I used to make weekly from Sydney to a university teaching job in Newcastle. I so enjoyed the gentle evolution of the landscape on this journey each week; urban quickly gives way to suburban, thence to mountainous bushland tumbling down into the Hawkesbury River. The train clings to the shoreline around Brisbane Waters, sparkling blindingly in the early morning sunshine, then snakes through more bushland, cuts through leafy suburbia and finally emerges into the industrial steel heart of Newcastle.Structurally, ​Road Trip​ is a motivic evolution, a four note motif that continually evolves and extends and transforms itself, in much the same way as I feel the landscape evolves around the silver bullet of a train hurtling down the tracks.
