Oscillation began as an experiment in coordination of a melody and harmony which are based on different means of organization. To this end, the clarinet is treated separately from the string quartet. The clarinet melody is constructed by means of limited interval usage. In mm.1–3 it can be observed that the melodic intervals are strictly limited to the use of a major 2nd/minor 7th or a major 6th/minor 3rd. By contrast, the string quartet has no limitation on its intervallic usage but always strives towards triadic harmonies in its accompanimental capacity and tends to converge on harmonies diatonic to the key. In addition, despite the proliferation of non-chord tones and transitionary passages in the string quartets’ music, the stable harmonies are written to have fairly parsimonious motion between them (if one were to reduce out the NCTs etc.) The coordination of these two separate logics is done by the selection of anchor-pitches for the melodic phrases. For example, the melodic phrase in mm.4–7 oscillates around the pitch of G natural (transposed in the score), which it shares with the F major/minor 7th chord that is heard as the harmonic goal of the strings in m.7. The teleology of the work can largely be traced in its melodic construction. Its opening phrase of mm.1–3 is anchored on G natural and ends on a C sharp, a tritone above the anchor, to simulate a half-cadence effect. The second phrase of mm.4–7 is still written on G natural but it ends on G as well, forming the authentic cadence and establishing a basic period as well as the work’s first theme. This is followed by second period which represents a dominant relationship to the first. The phrase at mm.10–13.2 is a rather extended utterance in comparison to the first two and is anchored on D natural. This is followed by 4-stage call and response across the ensemble (excluding the second violin) that leads the first section to a close at m.16 on a C diminished triad. Melodically, the first section is characterised by its limited used of a major 2nd/minor 7th or a major 6th/minor 3rd interval. At m.17, the second section follows much the same process as the first, using anchor pitches as a means of coordination and formal definition, and alternating soloistic clarinet playing with activated harmonies in the strings. The primary difference is in the character of the second section’s theme with regards to its rhythmic profile as well as its intervallic content. Namely, these are limited to the use of a minor 3rd or minor 2nd and their inversions. The second section draws to a close at m.32, returning to the tonic harmony of the key. With the first and second sections complete, the work now proceeds into a developmental section. Mm.33–84 largely consists of development of the two themes by manipulation of intervallic content as well as adjusting the placement of the thematic material withing the accompanimental context. This does include juxtaposition of the two themes (though one typicall becomes integrated into to accompaniment) as can be seen between the violin and viola at m.39. Variety is heightened by the introduction of episodic material such as the secondary melody performed by the clarinet at mm.40–41. The Lento section starting at m.53 introduces further rhythmic and metric adjustment of the thematic content. A varied recapitulation occurs at mm.85–113 and is followed by a coda at mm.114–131.

It is based upon the classical Rondo Form, with this particular pattern of the form being ABACBA. These six sections that comprise the piece all focus in some capacity on two individual themes: the first, slower theme of the A Section and the contrastingly more lively theme that follows immediately afterward in the B Section.Below is a theoretical analysis of the parts and how they each have their own unique nod, whether big or small, to these two main themes. A1 (mm. 1-9): The opening section of the piece, which introduces Theme 1.B1 (mm. 10-22): Directly following the opening, this section introduces Theme 2.A2 (mm. 23-58): After a brief interlude from the bassoon part, the main motif from Theme 1 returns, presented as motivic manipulation in the clarinet part of this section, underneath the flute melody.C (mm. 59-123): A new, more jaunty section not yet heard in the piece, though which still contains occasional traces of the main motif from Theme 2.B2 (mm. 124-144): Theme 2 in a modulated key and with a more majestic energy. This means that if you take the first term of the sequence, then the fourth, then the seventh, and so on, you get a copy of the original sequence. The sequence begins in the clarinet melody at m. 9, while the right-hand notes of the piano part feature a slower statement of the same sequence. In the first half of the melody (mm. 9-12), the numbers 0, 1, 2 are represented by the notes B, C, D; in the second half (mm. 13-16), the scheme shifts downward by two steps to G, A, B. After an interlude (mm. 17-24), the sequence continues in mm. 25-32, now shifting the scheme downward by one step every bar. In the third section (mm. 40-47), the scheme shifts downward by two steps every two bars.

I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet. Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this. Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. If you end up with a nice recording and would be OK sharing that with me, please reach out!

Anmerkung der Komponistin Das Vaterunser (Global Version) ist eine zeitgenössische Fassung des Vaterunsers, in der pentatonische Tonleitern und Kombinationen aus traditionellen und nicht-traditionellen Harmonien und Rhythmen verwendet werden. Das Gebet selbst ist ein Plädoyer dafür, dass Gottes Wille in jedem von uns getan wird. Infolgedessen sollte während der gesamten Arbeit eine aufrichtige und ernsthafte Stimmung im Vordergrund stehen. Die meisten Christen kennen das Gebet auswendig in ihrer eigenen Sprache und es wird heute von jeder christlichen Tradition verwendet. Ich habe die globale Version für drei verschiedene Sprachen geschrieben: Englisch, Deutsch und Koreanisch. Diese Hymne ist im Stil des Responsorial-Gesangs gehalten: Ein Solist singt eine Linie, der der Chor oder die Klavierbegleitung folgen. Jede Passage wird auf ihre eigene Weise entwickelt, aber die übliche Technik, die in dieser Arbeit verwendet wird, ist die systematische Verwendung von Wiederholungen, die dem Vorhandenen neue Texturschichten hinzufügen (z. B. mm.11–18 und mm. 19–33). Diese Technik beginnt mit einer einfachen Figur, die einige Male mit leichten Abweichungen wiederholt wird. Das Klavier mit einer einfachen viertaktigen Passage führt in den neuen Abschnitt und die neue Zeit ein. Dann treten Chor, Solist und Klavier im leicht modifizierten Call-and-Response Stil auf. The first section (mm 1-8) should be strongly accented, and all notes should be separated, depicting a medieval military group moving into protect a town. The second theme (mm 9-16) requires a quiet but firm strength and signifies the militia standing quietly at the ready. All quarter notes with tenuto marks should have weight to them. Listen carefully for the initial militant theme as it returns in the piano part (mm 17-24); it should be played strongly and heard clearly. The third theme, depicting the village resting peacefully, unaware of the battle, is in the new key of D major. Pay attention to the F#s and the C# at the end of this lyrical section. The first theme returns again at measure 39 in yet another new key, e minor. The piece builds from here to the end as the village is saved. The bassoon part states the same idea four times in measures 45-48, and each statement should be stronger than previous one.

Highland Bee Keeper (Etude #11) is in a Light Fusion style reminiscent of certain European improvisational artists, particularly those heard on the ECM record label. It has a straight 8th-note feel and consists of three sections: mm. 1 - 42 present the main themes; mm. 43 - 84 represent a solo section with an improivisational-like melodic line played over open fifths with the left hand in recurring syncopated rhythms. Mode names are used in place of chord symbols (over the treble cleff) that indicate to source of the melodic material; the third section, mm. 85 - 122, is a return to the first section, with small variations and a short coda.

Thad and Finas (Etude #13) is based on the harmonic progression used by George Gershwin in his song, I Got Rhythm, widely known as rhythm changes. The form is AABA, divided into 8-measure phrases. The first chorus (mm. 1 -32) consists mostly of two-handed chordal textures with the melody on top in the right hand. This chorus includes harmonizations, chord voicings, and melodic shapes similar to those used by jazz composer and arranger Thad Jones. The second chorus (mm. 33 - 64) consists mainly of single solo melodic lines in the right hand with shell voicings in the left hand that lightly support the melodic lines harmonically and rhythmically. The third chorus (mm. 65 - 96) begins with melodic lines played in unison with both hands two octaves apart, a style of soloing that jazz pianist Phineas Newborn Jr. (Finas) perfected in the 1950s and 60s. In the fourth chorus, beginning in measure 97, the harmonic progression is altered in the A sections, borrowing a clever cycle of fifths progression that was first developed by jazz pianists Art Tatum and Thelonious Monk in the 1940s. Before the piece ends there is a brief moment of stride left hand accompaniment that propels the piece to an exciting conclusion.

I have spread the voices around, so there is NOT a constant tutti of all 5 players The Requiem in D minor, K. 626, is a requiem mass by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). Mozart composed part of the Requiem in Vienna in late 1791, but it was unfinished at his death on 5 December the same year. A completed version dated 1792 by Franz Xaver Süssmayr was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg, who commissioned the piece for a requiem service on 14 February 1792 to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of his wife Anna at the age of 20 on 14 February 1791. This is no 4 of the Sequenz Recordare At 130 measures, the Recordare (Remember) is the work's longest movement, as well as the first in triple meter the movement is a setting of no fewer than seven stanzas of the Dies irae. The form of this piece is somewhat similar to sonata form, with an exposition around two themes (mm. 1–37), a development of two themes (mm. 38–92) and a recapitulation (mm. 93–98). It suits the wind quintet. Section III of the requiem is titled “Sequenz†(sequentia or sequence). It is made up of the following pieces I have arrangements of all of them, for varying types of ensemble * Dies irae * Tuba mirum * Rex tremendae * Recordare * Confutatis * Lacrymosa. I have also arranged Mozarts Motet “Ave Verum Corpus†K618.
