Irish music cast its spell early on in the many years I have performed as part of a duo of violin and recorder, so it was inevitable that I would be drawn to create new arrangements for this intimate combination of instruments. Peggy contains four traditional tunes selected from O’Neill’s Music of Ireland and arranged as duos by Dorothy van Joolen Barth. These tunes are part of a larger anthology titled Maidens of Melody Volume Two, available separately as a download for those who would prefer to have the complete book. As an audio sample, Pretty Peggy Reel is provided here. These arrangements can be played on recorder and violin (which is how we play them), flute and violin, or two violins. If the upper part is played on recorder, the recorder player may switch between soprano, alto, and tenor recorders in accordance with the range and mood of each piece. We generally prefer the soprano recorder on the faster reels, jigs, and hornpipes and the tenor recorder (or sometimes the alto recorder) on the more lyrical pieces. In performing this music, we often devise new ornaments, in keeping with Celtic tradition where no two performances of a piece are ever identical. You will likewise add your own meaning to this evocative music. These pieces are delightful perform for Celtic festivals, St. Patrick's Day celebration, weddings, birthdays, and other theme events. May this music provide both player and listener with much enjoyment. Manuscript revised August 2015.

La Fiera de Mast’Andrea (Mast’Andrea fair) is a lively Neapolitan folk song, published in 1845 by Girard & Co. and also found in the collection Florimo da camera and Vincenzo De Meglio's collection, Eco di Napoli, in a lively tarantella rhythm. The structure of the piece, of great strength and narrative liveliness, falls within the tradition of the so-called cumulative songs, present in various regions of Italy, in which each strophe has added the elements listed in the previous stanzas, up to a long tongue twister. The text lists the purchase of a series of musical instruments (bells, tambourine, violin and the traditional calascione) and some weapons (rifle, cannon, and pistol), whose sound is reproduced onomatopoeically in the song, like a nursery rhyme, with the imitations of instruments: the bell, the tambourine, then the violin, the calascione, etc.SATB, divisi, a cappella - 11 pages - Duration time: 4'00 ca.

Through text and music as sound material: the choice of the German tongue as a philosophic language; in its sonority, the reference to the tradition of Lieder, a form where word and sound construct a system of meanings in search of the essential. Materializing it through sound, the works achieve this “concentration†of the essential, guided by the question of the “being.†But, how do they achieve it? Long phrases, almost Gregorian rhythmicity, recuperate the capacity for enunciation born of medieval liturgical chant and Buddhist mantras. The concentration of power in the invoked words – to enunciate is to make real what is invoked. The essence is enunciated in the concept, in the construction of the enunciations that constitute the exoskeleton of these songs. The sound materializes the concept; it is sound that creates reality. The sound is in the center of the congealed hurricane. A person that asks the question of “beingâ€, stops time. Their presence is now; only the now exists. Even though it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion, being intended for beginner students who want to immerse themselves in the universe of romantic music, and nothing better than starting with the transitional composer of this period, which also does not prevent professional teachers from using it for recitals, academic presentations or didactic material in their classes as an ensemble practice. Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor sharp, Op. 27, No. 2, is one of his most popular compositions and was an audience favorite even in his day. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

Composer’s Note - Sifting the StarsIn 2015 I was commissioned by Sydney Philharmonia Choirs to create a Christmas show for kids. Being me, I decided that I wanted to make it a narrative show because I’m ambitious that way. It was called Cog in the Machine (a family Christmas tale with a twist) and alongside the carols was a gentle commentary on the commercialisation of the festive season, and how our priorities of family celebration are often overshadowed by the extravagance of gift giving.One of the main characters in the story is a smart, sassy teenage girl called Stella. She loves science, particularly astronomy (hence the name!) and it was therefore a family tradition for her to put the star on the top of the Christmas tree each year. This particular Christmas, she has a bit of a disagreement with her mother and as she’s putting the star on the tree, she goes into a kind of dream sequence, floating about the galaxies inside her head, trying to process her adolescent need for independence and protection in equal amounts.
