Latin/English. Dixi
t Dominus (Ps 109), a
psalm setting for double
choir, is one of
Vivaldi's most
significant sacred works.
In it, he takes up the
old Venetian polychoral
tradition, combining its
compositional techniques
with those of the
instrumental concerto,
the cantata and the
opera. The broadly
conceived cycle of
movements, consisting of
eight psalm verses and
the doxology, is
characterized by an
expansive arch of
tonalities connecting the
two framing outer
movements in D major
(these are also
thematically related):
Dixit Dominus and Gloria
Patri. The contrasting
and varied inner
movements are perfect
examples of Vivaldi's
skill in vividly
portraying linguistic
figures in music. Score

Roland E Martin.
Cathedral. Choral,
General. Octavo.
Paraclete Press #0017.
Published by Paraclete
Press (PL.0017).
This extended
work sets the Martin text
(Hail Mary, O Source of
Life) from Hildegard von
Bingen (12th cent.). Its
use of much divisi
creates a rich sound that
reflects the ecstatic
quality of the text. The
shape of the long phrases
is reminiscent of the
motets of Bruckner. There
is a lovely soprano duet
at the words O dulcissima
and the Gloria Patri is
set in a fugal style,
building to a dynamic
climax and followed by a
long decrescendo on the
final Amen. This moving
work is appropriate for
Marian feasts and for
concerts. $3.00 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks | | |
