The music of Handel is considered the culmination of the Baroque period of music history, and his Water Music (1717) has endured in popularity for nearly 300 years! Performed from a barge traveling on the River Thames, King George I is said to have liked the music so much that he ordered it repeated several times. Originally three suites each consisting of multiple movements, Johnnie Vinson has skillfully adapted this arrangement for young players using “Alla Hornpipe” from the Suite in D Major, and the “Air” and “Allegro” from the Suite in F Major. Handel� �s Concerto in F major (HWV 331) was long considered a variant of two movements from the three suites of his “Water Music” (HWV 348-350). Recently our understanding of the “Water Music” had to be thoroughly revised owing to new scholarly discoveries. Not only did the structure of the three suites prove to be unhistorical, but Friedrich Chrysander’s 19th-century view turned out to be correct: the two “variants” actually constitute an independent concerto.

In musical terms, HWV 331 is related to two movements of the “Water Music” and is frequently performed alongside them. Now it is available for the first time in a performing edition based on the already revised volume of the “Halle Handel Edition”, which reflects the current state of scholarship concerning the complex source tradition of the “Water Music” and the Concerto HWV 331.

George Frederic Handel's world famous Water Music was actually first performed on water: On the 22nd of August 1715 a boat with musicians accompanied the sovereign King George I. and his Royal household on a boat trip down the Thamses from Whitehall to Limehouse. During the return trip they played for the very first time a Suite from the Water Music. Two more Musical trips took place on 17th and 19th of July 1717. This Arrangement for four flutes combines the most famous movements into an individual Suite. Occasional divisi-passages are optional.
