Le nouveau Robert Schumann Edition (RSA) est conçu comme une édition historico-critique des oeuvres recueillies. Ils seront soigneusement étudiés et préparés selon des techniques musicologiques et rédactionnelles actuelles et présentés dans leur intégralité. Although Schumann's first attempts at composing for this supreme form of chamber music in 1838/39 were only fragments, the three String Quartets op. 41 in a minor, F major and A major were written in one go in June/July 1842. At the first private performances the audience was enthusiastic and it was Mendelssohn's praise in particular that occasioned Schumann to dedicate the new works to him. The composer wrote to his publisher in an appropriately confident manner: 'Be assured, I have spared no pains in creating something very decent, indeed I sometimes think it is my best?. As is generally known, today Schumann's Opus 41 forms part of the core repertoire for quartet players. / Quatuor A Cordes

relationship even beyond

Schumann's medical
records from the mental
asylum in Endenich,
Reimann guarded the
secret of the

Reimann's 70th birthday

150th anniversary of

Reimann decided to
publish the records and
comment on them in his

the Schumann Festival in

full of crises. The
composition coincides
with the first
signs of his illness. The
picture of the drowning
Ophelia evoked in the
first chant
conjures up the image of
his suicide attempt three
years later. Aribert
Reimann's transcription
seems to be opposed to
Schumann's endeavours to
make stronger use of 'the
development of the
accompanying instrument,
the piano'. On the other
hand, the complete
integration of the vocal
part in the musical
setting of the string
quartet confirms
Schumann's assessment
that the singing voice
alone cannot 'express
everything; apart from
the expression of the
whole, even subtle
nuances of the poem shall
become apparent'. These
transcriptions show
Reimann's sense of timbre
and his many years of
experience as a lied
