Il tire son circuit de compresseurs comme le Neve 2254 utilisant un pont de diodes dans le circuit de détection. Ce dernier est connu pour avoir un son doux, chaleureux et musical qui s'adapte à tous les styles et à tous les instruments. On est pas surpris de le retrouver dans quantité d'albums depuis son entrée en service en 1969 et vous pouvez aujourd'hui en retrouver l'essence même dans le COMP-54 à un prix beaucoup plus abordable. Le pont de diodes du COMP-54 est reconnu pour la souplesse de sa compression. Hormis le 2254 et le 2264, on retrouve aussi cette topologie dans le Neve 33609, ainsi que chez SiemensTM et EMITM . L'étendue des ratios, attack, release, et les deux modes 'auto' font du COMP-54 un outil très flexible. A l'exception du 'Gain' tous les potards sont crantés pour faciliter le rappel des réglages ou l'utilisation en stéréo. On dispose également d'un filtre sidechain à 3 positions (50Hz, 100Hz, 7KHz) afin de répondre à toutes les situations. Si le COMP-54 bénéficie également d'un vrai 'bypass', le bouton 'IN/OUT' permettra lui de profiter de la couleur des transformateurs du compresseur sans appliquer de compression à la source.
