Besides Bach, Domenico Scarlatti is the other Baroque composer whose keyboard works sound really great on the modern piano. The editor of this volume has chosen sixteen pieces from the 555 surviving single-movement keyboard sonatas by Scarlatti. This compilation is designed to offer a representative selection in order to give a taste of the incredibly rich world of Scarlatti's sonatas in terms of their character, structure, and keyboard techniques: they include lyrical Andantes and powerful, etude-like, whirling Allegros, pieces inspired by Spanish folk music and guitar-playing, as well as sonatas that anticipate the Viennese classical style. None of these movements exceed amoderate difficulty level.

Neben Bach ist Domenico Scarlatti der andere Barock-Komponist, dessen Werke für Tasteninstrumente auch auf dem heutigen Klavier gut klingen. Aus seinen 555, meistens einsätzigen Sonaten wählte der Herausgeber für den vorliegenden Band sechzehn Stücke aus. Diese wurden mit dem Anspruch einer repräsentativen Auswahl zusammengestellt. Der Band gibt einen Vorgeschmack von der unglaublich reichen Welt der Charaktere, Texturen und Tasteninstrumententechnik en der Scarlatti-Sonaten: Neben melodischen, wunderschönen Andanten und etüdenähnlichen, wirkungsvollen Allegri bekommen in ihr auch Stücke ihren Platz, welche von der spanischen Volksmusik und von der Gitarrenspieltechnik inspiriertsind, oder Sonaten, die die Wiener Klassik erahnen lassen. Diesen ist außer dem Komponisten nur eines gemeinsam: Hinsichtlich ihrer technischen Anforderungen überschreitet keine die mittlere Stufe.

The first instrumental compositions Boismortier published were sonatas for two transverse flutes without bass, of which he wrote eight sets. They document both his development as a composer and the early evolution of the genre itself. The Six Sonates pour II Flutes traversieres Sans Baße Op. 47 (1733) — his last surviving set of such works — are ostensibly in the ‘Italian’ style. The dance-heavy format of the earlier ‘French’ sonatas has been abandoned, and structurally they reflect the influence of Telemann’s Sonates sans Basse à deux Flutes traveres [sic] (the second of their four movements is always a fugue). Set in tonalities comfortable for the baroque flute, these virtually unknown duets are expertly written for the one-keyed instrument and are richly rewarding to perform.

Sea Dreams was originally a commission, in 2007, from an American University who wanted me to write a piece in memory of my first wife, Jean, who died in 2006. I set about writing the music and quickly completed the score early in 2008, but, unfortunately, because of the sudden collapse in the worldwide financial markets the commission itself fell through. The music draws on three of the pieces that I had written for Jean in the early days before we were married, namely two violin sonatas (she was a violinist) and the 'Serenade' Opus 22 one of my most popular pieces. However the bulk of the music is new, and the quotes from these early pieces are subtle and merely passing references, not at all like the originals. After an introduction, which is not heard again until the end of the piece, the music becomes a rondo allegro, and gradually builds to a big climax. Von der Existenz der sieben verschollenen Klaviersonaten Hob. XVI: 2a-e und g-h wissen wir lediglich durch die Eintragungen in den sogenannten Entwurf-Katalog, dessen Hauptteil Ende 1765 entstand. Haydn führte den Katalog bis 1777 fort, indem er von Zeit zu Zeit die jeweils neu komponierten Werke ergänzte. Entstanden sind die Sonaten vermutlich in der Zeit zwischen 1766 und 1772. Die Tatsache, dass die Sonaten verschollen sind, wird häufig mit dem Brand, dem Haydns Haus in Eisenstadt im Jahr 1768 zum Opfer fiel, in Verbindung gebracht. Der Zeitraum 1766 bis 1772 deckt sich ziemlich genau mit der häufig, jedoch nur unzureichend charakterisierend Sturm und Drang-Zeit genannten Schaffensphase des Komponisten, die den Höhepunkt einer Phase intensiven Experimentierens und Suchens nach neuen Wegen auf fast allen für Haydn besonders bedeutsamen Gebieten der Instrumentalmusik, der Symphonie, dem Streichquartett und der Klaviersonate, bildet. Da die Eintragungen im Entwurf-Katalog lediglich die ersten zwei bis vier Takte der je ersten Sätze der Sonaten wiedergeben, musste der Verfasser nicht nur den restlichen Verlauf der Eröffnungssätze weitgehend selbst erdichten, er war auch bei der Gesamtanlage der Sonaten (Anzahl und musikalischer Inhalt der übrigen Sätze) insofern auf sich allein gestellt, als der Entwurf-Katalog hierüber keine Auskunft gibt. Als stilistische Vorbilder dienten naturgemäß die im genannten Zeitraum komponierten und erhaltenen Sonaten. Darüber hinaus hat der Verfasser versucht, eine möglichst große Bandbreite der verschiedenen Formen, die in Haydns Musik dieses Zeitraums zu finden sind, abzubilden. Ebenso differenziert und zur Nachahmung herausfordernd ist der Abwechslungsreichtum der Satztechniken, die Haydn verwendet. Dem Vorbild Haydns folgend sind vor allem die dynamischen Angaben auf ein Minimum reduziert und sollen bewusst Raum zur eigenen fantasievollen Interpretation lassen. (Thomas Enselein).

Sona ta 7 in D major opens with a sunny Andante that nevertheless has a poignant moment just before the end. The technically challenging Allegro moderato that follows bounces along airily, throwing out scales, arpeggios and wide leaps with equal abandon. The concluding Allegro is a feast of syncopation: an object lesson in how to compose a coherent movement based on a single idea that never comes close to sounding tedious. Sonata 8, in the same key, is the only work in the set to arrange its three movements in a Fast–Slow–F ast pattern. Its opening Allegro is especially well-developed formally, coming close to mature Classical sonata style. For the Adagio in B minor Balicourt takes a chromatic idea heard earlier in the first movement and develops it intensively and poignantly: this is the ‘jewel’ of the slow movements in the set. The Moderato finale is enlivened with some interesting modulations and harmonic twists as well as some attractive moments of animation in the bass.

Carl Vine's Piano Concerto No. 1 (1997) is one of three large-scale works composed with pianist Michael Kieran Harvey in mind---the others being his first two piano sonatas. Vine describes it as a conscious and continuous tribute to the piano concerto as a medium and historical entity, a fact most apparent in the slow movement, with its long melodic lines evoking both Ravel and Bach. This 25-minute concerto is cast in the familiar three-movement form, with fast outer movements framing a central slow movement. The outer movements share some material (particularly in some lively conversational interchanges between piano and trumpet), and also some typically pianistic glitter across the orchestra, with harp and glockenspiel ensuring that the piano is less of an outsider than might have otherwise been the case.
