The most famous version is based on a traditional music and a 1824 text written in German by Ernst Anschütz, organist and professor at Leipzig. The first known version of the words date from 1550, another version was composed in 1615 by Melchior Franck. This song has been translated into many languages. Music is used by the international movement of workers "The Red Flag" (Red Flag), since 1939, it is also the official anthem of the State of Maryland in the United States.
