Added by saxman05, 07 Apr 2014 This composition started out as an arrangement of "Satin Doll" in 3/4 time but quickly took a different turn. I have a penchant for taking a standard tune and putting my own "twist" on it. They say a jazz musician never plays a song the same way ONCE!. That is certainly the case here. The composition begins with the tenor playing the lead voice, which is a departure from standard sax quartet voicing. I believe this gives it a Woody Herman "Four Brothers" type sound. In several instances I have a 7/4 measure and paraphrase John Coltrane's "Countdown", thus the title "Changes" (Coltrane "changes") Over "Time" ( shifting meters between 3/4, 4/4 and 7/4). The quarter note remains constant throughout. It would take an astute listener to find "Satin Doll" in there but if you listen closely you will hear it as the underpinning to a unique original composition. Enjoy! |
