Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710 – 1736) was an Italian composer, violinist and organist born at Iesi, Pergolesi and studied music there under a local musician, Francesco Santini. In 1725 he travelled to Naples where he studied under Gaetano Greco and Francesco Feo among others. He spent most of his brief life working for aristocratic patrons like the Colonna principe di Stigliano, and duca Marzio IV Maddaloni Carafa. The flute concerto is a concerto for solo flute and instrumental ensemble, customarily the orchestra. This work by Pergolesi was written in the Baroque period, when the solo concerto form was first developed, and continues up through the present day. Some major composers have contributed to the flute concerto repertoire, with the best known works including those by Mozart and Vivaldi. Although this piece was originally written for Flute, Violins and Basso Continuo, I arranged it for Woodwind Quartet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet & Bassoon).
