Georg August Lumbye ( 26 August 1843 in Copenhagen – 29 October 1922 at Oringe near Vordingborg ) was a Danish composer and orchestra leader. He was the son of HC Lumbye and the brother of Carl Christian Lumbye . His son Theodor (Tippe) Lumbye was also a musician and composer.
Georg Lumbye was trained as a violinist and zither player , and from 1863 he was a member of his father's orchestra in Tivoli . In 1867 - 1869 he furthered his education in Paris with the composer Francois Bazin as a teacher in music theory. Among the fellow students was the composer and bandmaster Johan Svendsen . From 1870 - 1880 he was the orchestra leader in Blanch's Café in Stockholm in the winter and occasionally had his own orchestra that toured Denmark. In the 1880s he played in various places in Copenhagen. From 1891- In 1897 he was conductor of Tivoli's Concert Hall orchestra, while his brother Carl Lumbye was conductor of Tivoli's concert hall. He then led the orchestra at the restaurant Wivel until 1908 , when he retired from musical life due to increasing problems linked to a manic-depressive psychosis . At the time of his death, he was staying at the psychiatric hospital Oringe near Vordingborg .
