Adalbert Gyrowetz (born Vojtěch Matyá? Jírovec) (February 20, 1763 in České Budějovice (Budweis) ? March 19, 1850 in Vienna) was an Austrian composer born in Bohemia. His father was the choirmaster in Budweis' cathedral, and Adalbert first studied with him. Adalbert then travelled to Prague, where he studied law but continued to learn music.

At around this time he was in the employment of Count Franz von Fünfkirchen in Brünn (Brno), whose employees were all musicians. Here he started composing, among other things , symphonies, of which he was eventually to write over three dozen. In 1785 he moved to Vienna, where he met and befriended Mozart, who is also known to have admired his music professionally.

From 1786 to around 1793, he travelled throughout Europe. He spent three years in Italy, meeting Goethe in Rome and studying with Scala in Naples. In 1791, he met Haydn, whom he idolized, in London. While in London, Johann Peter Salomon commissioned symphonies from Gyrowetz to be performed at his Hanover Square Room Concerts.
Il commence ses études musicales avec son père, chef de choeur à la cathédrale de Budejovice (alors Budweis) avant de rejoindre Prague pour y étudier le droit.

Il devient ensuite secrétaire du comte Franz von Fünfkirchen à Brünn (aujourd'hui Brno) pour lequel il participe aux concerts de l'orchestre. Il compose ses premières symphonies afin de les envoyer à un éditeur. En 1785, il rejoint Vienne, où il se lie d'amitié avec Mozart qui l'encourage à perséver dans la composition.

De 1786 à 1793, il voyage à travers toute l'Europe où il rencontre Johann Wolfgang von Goethe à Rome, Ignace Pleyel et Joseph Haydn à Londres lors des concerts Salomon en 1791. A Paris, il découvre que l'une de ses symphonies a été attribuée à Haydn, dont la renommée permet aux éditeurs de vendre aisément les ?uvres.

Il retourne ensuite en Bohème en 1793. En 1804, il est nommé au poste prestigieux de vice Maître de Chapelle du théâtre de la Cour de Vienne. Il fait la connaissance de Beethoven, dont il devient l'ami. Son ?uvre très méconnue a été redécouverte par les London Mozart Players en 2000, avec l'enregistrement des symphonies opus 6 N° 2 et 3 et opus 12 N° 1. De style galant, elle se rapproche des symphonies écrites par Joseph Haydn.

Outre des opéras, il a également écrit un nombre important de pièces de musique de chambre.
