Robert Schumann (1810 - 1856) was a famous German
composer of the romantic period. In 1849 he composed
“Fünf Stücke im Volkston” (Five Pieces in Popular
Style) for Violoncello and piano, published in 1851 as
opus 102. The series was devoted to Andreas Grabau
(1808 – 1884), a cellist of the Gewandhaus Orchestra
Leipzig. Despite the fact that Schumann in his youth
himself played cello, these pieces are the only
original compositions for cello and piano by him. In
