Martin was born in Hungary in the 4th century and grew up in Pavia (Italy). As a Roman soldier like his father he was stationed e.g. in Amiens (France), Milan (Italy) and Trier (Germany). After leaving the army he travelled and preached through western Gaul until he was acclaimed bishop of Tours at the river Loire (France). Martin has become one of the most familiar and recognizable Christian saints in France and is patron saint of many communities and organizations across Europe, where his feast is celebrated on 11th November. He is best known for the account of using his military sword to cut his cloak in two, to give half to a beggar clad only in rags in the depth of winter.
