SUMMER SONGS was written for the 30th anniversary of the Skaneateles Music Festival in central New York state. It began as a set of songs using poetry by several writers in that region to be accompanied by a small chamber group of instruments. Eventually the work transformed into something more intriguing to me: a suite of instrumental movements that “comment†on the individual poems which are rst narrated, but not sung.
