Dan Timis (1954 - 2009) Roumanie (15 July 1954 -3 February 2009)
Brilliant representative of the Romanian music, IT and composer Dan Timis imposed and internationally through his highly complex, combining the most noble elements of tradition (including the wonderful Romanian vein) with innovations designed to change thinking componistica, thanks to techniques in rapidly developing specific digital art.
Born on 15 July 1954 in Bucharest, as the only son of Master Vasile Timis, Dan began studying piano at the School of Music with distinguished professor Nr.5 Marta Paladi, then courses No.1 High School of Music (now High School 'Dinu Lipatti '-where I had the privilege of classmate) and the Conservatoire' Ciprian Porumbescu ' (the present National University of Music), where he graduated Composition Department, with the guidance of renowned representatives of the Romanian school, as Anatol Vieru, Stefan Niculescu , Aurel Stroe, Liviu Comes, Dinu Petrescu, Dinu Ciocan and Ioana Minei.
Since the study was imposed by the extraordinary talent or componistic, but also by the enthusiasm shown in the direction of discovery with the help of computer, new solutions in developing sound expression -in this sense he continued successfully and in a plan initiated education experiments in Romania by Aurel Stroe and Grigore Moisil. Thus, in parallel studies conducted at the Conservatory of music, he attended courses and the Faculty of Automation and Computers, Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest.
Marked by these experiences multidisciplinary creation of this period was distinguished by the major awards given by the Union of Composers and Musicologists from Romania and by the Conservatory 'Ciprian Porumbescu -historically standing out of them is a series of reference works, such as the Cantata on the texts by Dimitrie Cantemir, the String Quartet (a masterpiece of the genre!), the splendid Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, the Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, the marvellous Songs on poems by Tudor Arghezi and, last but not least, music for films designed to young directors -members of his generation, such as Horia Constantin and Dinu Lazar.
He was a redoubtable pianist, consistent with promoting the creation of the Romanian Society 'Music' (animated by the illustrious musicologist Radu Stan), both as soloist and as a member of the trio 'NTN', along with clarinet virtuoso John Nedelciu and signatory of these lines (on cello) -all three are linked by the most profound feelings of friendship.
After graduating from the Conservatoire as head of promotion in 1978, he participated in several editions of the summer courses at Darmstadt supported by Morton Feldman, Ton de Leeuw, Mauricio Kagel and Brian Ferneyhough, and at the conducting courses at Weimar coordinated by Igor Markevitch. In 1982 he settled in Paris, where he graduated and the Faculty of Science, after working as a professor at the prestigious IRCAM, which has designed, along with Rob Gross, new systems of audio files and apply the 'Berkeley UNIX'.
In 1987 is invited to teach musical informatics at the University of Santa Barbara (USA), where it quickly and as founder of the Center for Experimental Music.
Fundamental advances in the science of music was widely appreciated, effectively inducing a paradigmatic shift. Mention in this context his revolutionary studies, entitled 'Method and system for editing digital audio information with music-like parameters' (Audio-to-MIDI/MIDI-to-Audio feature, United States Patent 5792971) and 'Using time-stamped event entries to facilitate synchronizing data streams' (United States Patent 20090006488). They were immediately applied by large companies in which the specialist Dan Timis and a thorough research: Opcode Systems (as Senior Programmer in the 'Vision Studio' software with several distinguished awards), Euphonix, Zoom, Antares, Kind of Loud, TuneTo.com, Arboretum Systems (as Director of Research and Development), Muse Research (as a principal adviser in creating the 'New Receiver Pro 2' and 'Hi Pro) and Apple (where he helped to develop iPod and iTunes).
We can thus say that Dan Timis has been a celebrity in this current musical science -key advances leading to the design of new coordinates of the XXI century music. He worked enormously dedicating the body and soul in this research field of avant-garde, creative and componistice itself through many musical applications subordinate its investigations. Used in this fever, perpetuate the exploration of new sound -involving days and nights of intense work -take the cord snapped, in a totally unexpected, in fatidical 3 days in February 2009 ...
He was very loved by his colleagues and American musicians and programmers, what they dedicated an exciting tribute to the Internet, 'Tribute to Dan Timis':
http://www.museresearch.com/blog/2009/02/tribute-to-dan-timis/
His disappearance is an irreparable loss for the American and Romanian musicians.
For me, it has lost much meaning lover my brother ...

Adornia is a
word invented by the
composer with a similar
meaning as ‘to
adorn’, which
means 'to embellish'. The
thematic cornerstones are
DORN, after the
commissioning band CMV
Juliana in Doornspijk,
Netherlands. It also
contains the chorale
‘Schmücke dich,
du liebe Seele’
used several times in
different variations.
Adornia contains
beautiful melodies, broad
dynamic passages and has
a spectacular conclusion.
Adornia is een
fantasiewoord afgeleid
van het Engelse werkwoord
‘to adorn’,
dat tooien, versieren,
opluisteren betekent.
Adornia is dan ook in de
eerste plaats een
compositie ter
opluistering van het
honderdjarig jubileum van
de CMV Juliana
uitDoornspijk. Maar het
gaat ook over het dorp
Doornspijk zelf en zijn
omgeving. Het is geen
toeval dat de letters
D-O-R-N uit de titel
terugkomen in de
plaatsnaam. Omdat
Doornspijk van oudsher
uitgesproken kerkelijk
is, bevat dit werk een
koraalthema,dat steeds
vanuit een nieuw
perspectief klinkt. Het
kerkelijke wordt zo
afgewisseld met het
wereldlijke, waarin beide
elementen niet
contrasteren maar elkaar
aanvullen. De gekozen
Duitse koraalmelodie,
oorspronkelijk van Johann
Crüger, heet
‘Schmückedich,
du liebe Seele’
(‘Tooi je
feestelijk, o dierbare
ziel’ alweer een
verwijzing naar de
titel). De
inleiding verwijst naar
de tweede zin van het
koraal: ‘Laat de
duistere poel van zonden
achter je’. Het
werk begint in mineur,
waarin een gedreven
majestueuze ritmiek
afgewisseld wordt met de
zachte koraalklanken. Dan
volgt een
snellere,beweeglijke
cadans, eveneens
hoofdzakelijk in mineur.
De ritmische impuls
symboliseert de zware
landarbeid die in vroeger
tijden verricht werd,
maar ook wordt hierin de
landarbeidersziel
verklankt, die ondanks de
armoede
‘getooid’ is
met optimisme.Dat
vertaalt zich door het
gebruik van versieringen
(trillers en
triolen). De
daaropvolgende pastorale
weerspiegelt het dorp en
zijn prachtige omgeving.
De bijna Rheingoldachtige
muziek klinkt nu in
majeur. Wel is er een
uitstapje naar mineur,
waarin het armoedige
boerenleven nog even
vanuit het verleden
weerklinkt. Maardan zorgt
de door het scherp koper
ingezette koraalmelodie
voor de opmaat van een
nog uitbundiger weergave
van het pastorale thema.
Het dorp en het
omliggende landschap
worden bejubeld met
klanken die doen denken
aan
jachtgeschal. Dan
klinkt de koraalmelodie
zacht gedragen in
fragmenten, afgewisseld
met ornamentele lijnen in
de saxen en klokken die
de zondag inluiden. De
strakke ritmische cadans
keert vervolgens terug.
Er zijn echter
veranderingen hoorbaar:
de mechanisatieheeft haar
intrede gedaan. Toch
horen we plotseling nog
een paard-en-wagen
voorbijkomen als in het
dorp de traditionele
boerenmarkt wordt
gehouden. De nieuwe
dynamiek voert naar een
hoogtepunt en mondt uit
in het koraal, deze keer
in een gedragenmars, met
een sierlijke bovenstem
van bugels en sopraansax.
Hier wordt het vervolg
van de koraaltekst
verklankt: ‘Kom
naar het heldere licht en
straal het uit’.
Adornia eindigt
feestelijk met hetzelfde
motief waarmee het begon,
maar nu in majeur.

Looking Up,
Moving On was
commissioned by the Tokyo
Kosei Wind Orchestra and
was part of a tour
programme they gave in
May 2012, a tour which
included many areas that
had been devastated by
the 2011 earthquake and
tsunami.The theme of the
piece is the powerful
ability of mankind to
overcome such disasters
and look forward to a
positive future; it opens
in an appropriately
optimistic mood,
featuring bright
orchestral colours and
extensive syncopation. A
chorale-like fanfare is
soon introduced on horns
and euphonium, answered
by chirpy woodwinds. The
mood subsides until an
alto saxophone introduces
a brief quotation from
the composer's The Sun
Will RiseAgain , which
was written to raise
funds for victims of the
2011 disaster. The mood
soon changes and the
horns introduce a noble
theme under woodwind
flourishes. This leads to
the main Vivo
section of the piece
which is characterised
again by strong
syncopations as part of a
florid theme in the low
woodwinds. This melody
undergoes varied
development by all
sections of the band
until the horn fanfare
returns triumphally on
the brass. This is
extended and leads to a
faster coda which brings
together previous
material in counterpoint
to close the work in
optimistic mood.
Looking Up,
Moving On is
gecomponeerd in opdracht
van het Tokyo Kosei Wind
Orchestra. Het werk
maakte deel uit van een
programma uit mei 2012,
dat werd uitgevoerd
tijdens een tournee
waarbij veel regio's
werden bezocht die waren
verwoest door de
aardbeving en tsunami van
2011.Het thema van het
werk is het buitengewone
vermogen van de mens om
dergelijke rampen te
boven te komen en vooruit
te kijken naar een
positieve toekomst. De
opening is dan ook
optimistisch van
karakter, met heldere
orkestrale kleuren en een
rijkelijke syncopering.
Al snel wordt er een
koraalachtige fanfare
geintroduceerd door de
hoorns en het euphonium,
waarop een levendig
antwoord volgt in
dehoutblazerssectie. De
sfeer wordt dan steeds
kalmer totdat een
altsaxofoon een kort
citaat laat horen uit een
eerder werk van de
componist, The Sun
Will Rise Again , dat
werd geschreven om geld
in te zamelen voor de
slachtoffers van de ramp
uit 2011. De stemming
slaat vlug weer om: de
hoorns introduceren een
nobel thema, dat
weerklinkt onder
versieringen in het hout.
Dit leidt naar het Vivo,
het hoofdgedeelte, dat
eveneens wordt gekenmerkt
door sterke
syncoperingen, als
onderdeel van een
sierlijk thema in het
lage hout. De melodie
ondergaat een gevarieerde
ontwikkeling binnen alle
secties van het orkest,
totdat de hoornfanfare op
triomfantelijke wijze
terugkeert in het koper.
De fanfare wordt
vervolgens verder
uitgewerkt en voert ons
mee naar een snellere
coda, die voorafgaand
materiaal in contrapunt
samenbrengt en de
compositie in
optimistische stemming
afsluit.
Looking Up,
Moving Down wurde vom
Tokyo Kosei Wind
Orchestra in Auftrag
gegeben und war Teil des
Konzertprogramms einer
Tour im Mai 2012, welche
viele Gebiete einschloss,
die vom Erdbeben und
Tsunami im Jahr 2011
zerstort worden waren.
Thema dieses Stuckes ist
die gewaltige Fahigkeit
der Menschheit, uber
solche Katastrophen
hinwegzukommen und voll
Optimismus in die Zukunft
zu blicken; es beginnt
dementsprechend in einer
positiven Stimmung mit
strahlenden
Orchesterfarben und einer
ausgepragten
Synkopierung. Schon bald
wird eine choralartige
Fanfare auf den Hornern
und im Euphonium
vorgestellt, die von
munteren Holzblasern
beantwortet wird. Die
Stimmung flaut ab, bis
einAltsaxophon ein kurzes
Zitat aus The Sun Will
Rise Again anspielt,
das der Komponist zur
Spendenbeschaffung fur
die Opfer des Unglucks
2011 geschrieben hatte.
Kurz darauf folgt ein
Stimmungswechsel und die
Horner prasentieren ein
stattliches Thema,
begleitet von Fanfaren in
den Holzblasern. Dies
fuhrt zum mit Vivo
uberschriebenen Hauptteil
des Stuckes, der wiederum
von starken
Synkopierungen gepragt
ist, die Teil eines
bluhenden Themas in den
tiefen Holzblasern sind.
Diese Melodie durchlauft
eine vielgestaltige
Entwicklung durch alle
Instrumentengruppen des
Blasorchesters, bis das
Blech mit der Hornfanfare
triumphal zuruckkehrt.
Dies wird erweitert und
fuhrt zu einer
schnelleren Coda, in dem
verschiedenes zuvor
gehortes Material
kontrapunktisch
zusammenkommt, um das
Werk in einer
optimistischen Stimmung
zu beenden.

les bois. Vient ensuite
la principale section
vivo de la piece, qui se
caracterise, encore une
fois, par des syncopes
tres marquees dans le
cadre d'un theme fleuri
assure dans le registre
grave des bois. Cette
melodie fait l'objet de
divers developpements par
tous les pupitres de
l'orchestre jusqu'au
retour triomphant de la
fanfare soutenue par les
cuivres. Celle-ci se
prolonge pour mener a une
coda plus rapide qui
rassemble les elements
precedents en contrepoint
pour clore la piece dans
un climat optimiste.

On a war
memorial in the Dutch
village of Wons is
engraved a list of names
to honour the fallen in
World War II. This is the
basis for the name of
this piece. However, this
composition was written
for everyone who has made
Wons what it is today: a
pretty place near to Lake
IJssel with a
comfortable way of life.
The piece begins with a
celebratory introduction
in which the village is
presented to the
listener. There follows a
delightful rhythmic and
high-tempo theme that
reflects the happiness,
innocence and carefree
atmosphere before the
war. Now we hear a moody,
fragmented theme
depicting soldiers
shooting. This is brought
to a close with dissonant
clusters of
sound,intoning the
dreadful tragedy of the
war. The ensuing quiet
gives way to a calm
middle section in a minor
key that portrays both
frustration and
consolation. The fast
tempo of the beginning
returns, this time in the
form of a victory march.
We hear freedom being
celebrated. We hear the
previous happy, innocent
and carefree themes, too.
There follows a festive,
martial theme, a tribute
to the village, before
the piece closes with
sounds of celebration.

klinkt een aansprekend
ritmisch thema in een
snel tempo dat de
vrolijkheid,
onbevangenheid en
onbezorgdheid van voor de
oorlog uitstraalt. Dit
gaat over in een melodie
in mineur, die het
naderendeoorlogsgevaar
aankondigt. Dan is er een
grillig thema met stops
waarin het schieten van
de soldaten te horen is.
Dit eindigt in enkele
dissonante clusters die
het tragische dieptepunt
van de oorlog
accentueren. De
daaropvolgende stilte
lost op in een gedragen
middendeel in mineur
waaruit enerzijds
verdriet en anderzijds

het snelle tempo van het

in de vorm van een

wordt gevierd. Ook het
thema van de vrolijkheid,

een eerbetoon aan het
dorp, waarna het werk
wordt afgesloten met
feestelijke klanken.

2011 was a
disastrous year for
Japan: on March 11 the
northeast of the country
suffered a violent
earthquake, which
triggered a huge tsunami
and caused massive damage
to people and the
environment. The ensuing
problems with the nuclear
reactor at Fukushima only
increased the misery: a
black day in the
country’s
history…One almost
inevitable consequence of
such dramatic
circumstances is the
particular damage
suffered by the cultural
arts. And so it was in
Japan: various high
school wind orchestras in
the effected areas lost
their practice rooms
and/or instruments. It
will take a long time
before the damage
suffered is
repaired—and it
will take great effort to
overcome thepsychological
effects, too. Focusing on
the latter, Yutada
Nishida (director of The
Bandwagon radio program)
asked a few composers for
a simple work that could
be played by many
orchestras. It just so
happened that the Osakan
Philharmonic Winds (with
whom Jan Van der Roost
had conducted a concert
exclusively of his own
works on September 25th)
had had a similar idea.
This concert saw the
baptism of Song of Hope.
This piece immediately
struck a chord with
musicians and audience
alike: it begins bleakly
in the low register and
evolves to a more open,
optimistic close. There
really is hope for better
times! 2011 was
een rampzalig jaar voor
Japan: op 11 maart
teisterde een hevige
aardbeving het
noordoosten van het land,
bracht een enorme tsunami
teweeg en veroorzaakte
zeer grote schade aan
mens en natuur. De
daaruit voortvloeiende
problemenmet de
kernreactor van Fukushima
maakten de ellende nog
groter: een zwarte pagina
in het bestaan van het
land ... Dat in
dergelijke dramatische
omstandigheden ook (en
vooral) het culturele
bestel een flinke knauw
krijgt, ishelaas een
haast onvermijdelijke
consequentie. Zo ook in
Japan: verschillende high
school bands in de
getroffen regio verloren
hun repetitieruimte en/of
instrumenten: het zal
lang duren voordat de
geleden schade is
hersteld - enhet zal ook
moeite kosten om er
mentaal weer bovenop te
geraken. Met het oog op
dat laatste aspect
verzocht Yutaka Nishida
(samensteller van het
radioprogramma The
Bandwagon) een paar
componisten om een
eenvoudig werkje te
schrijvendat speelbaar is
door een groot aantal
orkesten. Als bij toeval
kwam een dergelijk
verzoek eveneens van de
kant van de OSAKAN
Philharmonic Winds,
waarmee Jan Van der Roost
op 25 september een
concert dirigeerde,
uitsluitend gewijdaan
eigen werken. Daar werd
Song of Hope dan ook ten
doop gehouden en het
werkje sloeg meteen aan
bij uitvoerders en
publiek: na een tamelijk
donkere start in het lage
register evolueert het
tot een optimistischer en
opener slot.Er is
inderdaad hoop op betere
tijden! Am 11.
März 2011 löste ein
heftiges Erdbeben in
Japan einen riesigen
Tsunami mit
desaströsen Folgen
für Mensch, Natur auch
das kulturelle Leben.
Yutaka Nishida vom
Radioprogramm The
Bandwagon bat daher
einige Komponisten,
darunter Jan Van der
Roost, ein einfaches,
für viele Orchester
spielbares Werk zu
schreiben. Song of
Hope beginnt
düster im tiefen
Register, um sich dann zu
einem optimistischeren
Schluss hin zu
entwickeln. Es gibt sie,
die Hoffnung auf bessere
Zeiten... ! 2011
fut une année tragique
pour le Japon : le 11
mars, le nord-est du pays
connut un violent
tremblement de terre qui
entraîna un
gigantesque tsunami,
occasionnant de
nombreuses pertes
humaines et de gros
dég ts
environnementaux. La
catastrophe du
réacteur nucléaire
de Fukushima ajouta
encore ces malheurs : une
période bien sombre de
l’histoire du
pays…Des
événements aussi
dramatiques ont souvent
un impact négatif sur
les arts culturels. Ce
fut le cas au Japon :
plusieurs orchestres
d’harmonie des
collèges des
régions affectées
perdirent leurs locaux de
répétition et/ou
leurs instruments. Il
faudra beaucoup de temps
pour que les choses
reviennent la normale -
et pour estomperles
cicatrices
psychologiques.
S’intéressant
particulièrement
celles-ci, Yutada Nishida
(directeur du programme
radiophonique The
Bandwagon) demanda
quelques compositeurs
d’écrire une
œuvre simple pouvant
être interprétée
par de nombreux
orchestres.Il se trouva
que l’Harmonie
Philharmonique
d’Osaka (que Jan
Van der Roost avait
dirigée lors
d’un concert
exclusivement composé
de ses œuvres, le 25
septembre) avait eu la
même idée. Ce
concert vit la
création mondiale de
Song of Hope, qui
interpella
immédiatement les
musiciens et
l’auditoire. Cette
pièce débute
sombrement dans le
registre grave avant
d’évoluer vers
une conclusion plus
pétillante, plus
optimiste. Il est
assurément permis
d’espérer des
temps meilleurs !
Il 2011 è
stato un anno tragico per
il Giappone; al
devastante terremoto e al
non meno catastrofico
tsunami dell’11
marzo, sono seguiti i
gravi problemi al
reattore nucleare di
Fukushima. Il settore
della cultura in
generale, e quello della
musica in particolare
hanno sofferto
immensamente a causa di
questi nefasti eventi
naturali. Song of
Hope è un brano
che ha profondamente
commosso esecutori e
pubblico.Song of
Hope inizia nel
registro acuto con suoni
oscuri e melanconici, ma
si sviluppa in un clima
di ottimismo, come a
voler simboleggiare un
futuro più sereno.
