English. At the
end of 1938, Jelly Roll
Morton (1890-1941)
returned to New York from
his years in Washington,
D.C. Recent publicity had
made a comeback seem
possible, and he hoped to
recapture the prominent
place in the jazz world
that he had held in the
1920s. Still well known,
though mainly as a New
Orleans music pioneer, he
understood that in order
to be taken seriously as
a contemporary artist, he
needed to form a big band
like those of his
competition, such as Duke
Ellington, Count Basie,
Benny Goodman, and Tommy
and Jimmy Dorsey. In the
1920s Morton's recordings
and tours featured a
ten-piece band following
the first-generation
big-band format. But in
the late 1930s, larger
groups were popular, so
Morton assembled a
conventional '30s band
consisting of four
saxophones, six brass,
and four rhythm. The band
was to open at the Golden
Gate Ballroom in Harlem
on April 17th, 1939, but
on opening night Morton
collapsed before going
onstage. During his
recuperation from the
asthma and heart problems
that dogged him, the band
broke up, never to
reassemble. Only six
items written for that
band's instrumentation
are known to exist:
Morton's arrangements of
his own compositions --
Finger Breaker, GanJam,
Good Old New York, Mister
Joe, and Stop and Go --
and an arrangement,
Mamies' Blues, by another
artist. -- James Dapogny
(Editor) As an
editor, Dapogny shows his
customary sound musical
scholarship and deep
knowledge of Morton's
style....The publishers
are to be congratulated
for bringing this
fascinating work into the
public domain, which
throws a totally new
light on 'Mister Jelly
Lord.' Who knows what he
would have achieved had
he lived beyond his
alleged 51 years?

English. To honor
Native American cultures,
Kevin Mixon has
creatively scored Native
American Homage. This
work represents music
typically heard at many
modern-day powwows,
commingling authentic
sounds of nature and
intertribal music.
Contrasting lyrical and
bravura sections
authentically and
respectfully present a
substantive introduction
to America's oldest known
indigenous music. This
compelling new work will
move audiences and draw
critical acclaim. A real
winner!

This monumental
programmatic work from
the pen of Rob Romeyn
captures the myth and
legend of Zeus, the
mythical master of the
gods and men. A sky god,
he controls lightning,
which he uses as a
weapon, and thunder. It
opens as Zeus becomes
involved in the Trojan
war, hurling lightning
bolts at his opponents.
The tension soon subsides
as we are introduced to
the eternally beautiful
Hera, whom Zeus would
eventually marry. The
music then ensues as our
story unfolds, as Zeus
made his domain the
mountaintops and clouds
where he could survey all
creation, and inflict
pain and justice on all
evildoers. Tension builds
as Zeus battles Typhon in
hand to hand combat,
ending ultimately with
Zeus throwing the
enormous Mt. Etna at the
monster, pinning him
underneath. From here,
the tension subsides, and
a beautiful lyrical
section builds to an
ending of incredible
power and grandeur as
Zeus again reaffirms his
stature as the ruler of
Mt. Olympus. This
exceptional work is a
wonderful addition to any
concert or festival
performance! $30.00 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 1 to 2 weeks | | |

English-German-French-Dut
ch. The Russian
composer Modest
Mussorgsky (1839-1881)
was self-educated to a
large extent but went on
to become one of the
?Mighty Five? which also
included Balakirev, Cui,
Borodin and
Rimsky-Korsakov. Today he
is considered the
innovator of Russian
music par excellence. He
composed Pictures at an
Exhibition in 1874,
inspired by ten pictures
produced by his then
recently deceased friend,
the Russian architect and
artist Victor Hartmann.
The French composer
Maurice Ravel made an
orchestration of
Mussorgsky?s composition
in 1922 which is now more
well-known and more
performed than the
original piano suite. For
his transcription of
Pictures at an
Exhibition, Tohru
Takahashimade use of the
original piano
composition by
Mussorgsky. The Great
Gate of Kiev, issued here
separately, is probably
the best known melody
from this classical
masterpiece.

De Franse componist
Maurice Ravel maakte in
1922 een orkestratie van
Moessorgsky’s
compositie - deze is
bekender en wordt meer
uitgevoerd dan de
oorspronkelijke
pianosuite. Voor zijn

Pictures at an

Tohru Takahahsi echter de
originele compositie van
Moessorgski. Dit
afzonderlijk uitgegeven
deel, The Great Gate

waarschijnlijk het
bekendst.
Obwohl
der russische Komponist
Modest Petrowitsch
Mussorgski
hauptsächlich als
Komponist von Opern und
Liedern bekannt ist,
schrieb er auch eine
Anzahl von bedeutenden
Klavierwerken, wie zum
Beispiel die
weltberühmte Suite
Bilder einer
Ausstellung, die
vielen besser in der
Orchestrierung von
Maurice Ravel bekannt
ist. Für seine
Transkription von
Bilder einer

Tohru Takahashi jedoch
auf die ursprüngliche
Komposition von
Mussorgski zurück. Der
separat

Das große Tor von
Kiew ist daraus der
wohl bekannteste Teil,
der immer wieder gerne
gespielt und gehört
wird.
