inches. In these
lieder, Robert Schumann
seems to mirror his life
full of crises. The
composition coincides
with the first
signs of his illness. The
picture of the drowning
Ophelia evoked in the
first chant
conjures up the image of
his suicide attempt three
years later. Aribert
Reimann's transcription
seems to be opposed to
Schumann's endeavours to
make stronger use of 'the
development of the
accompanying instrument,
the piano'. On the other
hand, the complete
integration of the vocal
part in the musical
setting of the string
quartet confirms
Schumann's assessment
that the singing voice
alone cannot 'express
everything; apart from
the expression of the
whole, even subtle
nuances of the poem shall
become apparent'. These
transcriptions show
Reimann's sense of timbre
and his many years of
experience as a lied
accompanist. $53.00 - Voir plus => Acheter

11.75 inches. This
book, which includes 308
tune transcriptions, is
organized around
individual fiddlers who
typically combine
Appalachian-style
fiddling with rags, pop
standards, Midwest-style
fiddling and sometimes a
touch of Western swing to
create a style often
identifiable as Ozarks.
Thirty Ozarks fiddlers
and their lives are
highlighted with
biographical sketches,
photographs, and tune
histories. Another 50
great Ozarks fiddlers are
presented in a similar
manner but with less
detail. The book and
accompanying audio with
37 tunes, many recorded
in the field emphasize
the older fiddling
traditions connected to
the square dances and
community events more
than those connected to
bluegrass music and
modern contest fiddling.
Some of the tunes in the
collection are old
standbys such as Bile
Them Cabbage while others
such as Finley Creek
Blues are unique to the
region. The book is the
result of years of work
by two respected
researchers. Gordon
McCann won the
prestigious Missouri Arts
Award in 2002 for his
decades of work
documenting, studying,
and accompanying Ozarks
fiddle music. Drew
Beisswenger, a music
librarian at Missouri
State University with a
Ph.D. in ethnomusicology,
has published three other
works about fiddle music
and is known for his
strong transcription and
analysis skills. Includes

English. Maurice
Ravel (1875-1937)
originally wrote Deux
Mélodies Hébraïques
(Two Hebrew Songs) for
voice and piano for
soprano Alvina Alvi, who
premiered the two songs
in June of 1914. While
both songs include French
text, the first and more
popular song, Kaddisch
(Holy), is also in
Aramaic, while the second
song, L'énigme
éternelle (The Eternal
Riddle), is in Yiddish.
Ravel orchestrated both
for voice and orchestra
in 1920, and many other
transcriptions,
particularly of Kaddisch,
have followed over the
years. This transcription
by the French composer
and arranger Lucien
Garban put Kaddisch into
the violin repertoire,
where it finds regular
performance.

English-German-Hungari
an. Béla
Bartók often used
musical material from his
folk music collections
for his compositions. His
Sonatina, originally
written for solo piano in
1915, was based on songs
that he collected in
Transylvania. The three
movements (1. Bagpipers -
Molto moderato, 2. Bear
Dance - Moderato, and 3.
Finale - Allegro vivace)
were orchestrated by
Bartók in 1931.
Shortly before
Bartók's orchestral
transcription was
finished, violinist
Gertler Endre's
transcript for violin and
piano was completed.
Gertler and Bartók
knew each other
personally and, in fact,
first made each other's
acquaintance as a result
of their shared
experience with their
respective
transcriptions. $10.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks
