Classical Guitar Alive.
McWilliams a demandé
que le premier mouvement
soit en forme
sonate-allegro, suivi de
deux autres pièces
reflétant les choix de
tempo d’une sonatine
en trois mouvements
typique. Comme c’est
le cas pour la plupart
des œuvres de Cruz,
cette Sonatine a
été achevée en
tant que musique pure,
sans programme
sous-jacent. Cependant,
dans sa quête de
trouver des titres autres
que des indications de
tempo, Cruz a extrait
trois mots de la
correspondance entre
lui-même et McWilliams
qui, ensemble, ajoutent
une touche personnelle
àla collection tout
en suggérant une
progression des
événements
d’une journée
imaginaire.
Un
point
d’intérêt dans
le premier mouvement, le
thème A : Cruz
commence sur
l’accord IV et
évite
intentionnellement
d’utiliser un accord

section B commence dans

rapidement vers un centre

In
September of 2018,
guitarist, Toby
McWilliams commissioned
Cruz to write a
three-movement guitar
solo after hearing his
Five Pieces in C on the
internationally
syndicated radio show,
Classical Guitar Alive.
McWilliams requested the
first movement to be in
sonata-allegro form
followed by two other
pieces that reflect the
tempo choices of a
typical three-movement
sonatina. As is the case
with most of Cruz’s
music, this Sonatina was
completed as music
written for music’s
sake. However, in his
quest to find titles
other than tempo
markings, Cruz plucked
three words from the
correspondence between
himself and McWilliams
that together, add a
personal touch to the
collection while
suggesting a progression
of an imaginary
day’s
events.
A point of
interest in the first
movement, A theme: Cruz
begins on the IV chord
and intentionally avoids
using a proper I chord
throughout. While the B
section does begin in the
dominant key, it moves
quickly towards a D major
tonal
center.
Festival
(3rd movement) uses a
bitonal opening theme: E
major in the top voice
while the bass line uses

croix expriment les 14
tableaux de la Passion du
Christ par
l’intermédiaire
d’un simple
arpège et de 14
tonalités
différentes. Les 12
tonalités mineures qui
débutent
l’œuvre de
façon parfaitement
naturelle (ré, la, mi,
si, fa#, do#, sol#,
ré#, sib, fa, do, sol)
sont suivi par deux
tonalités majeures
(ré et la) qui
viennent conclurent
l’œuvre comme une
triomphante
délivrance.
La
deuxième pièce
Labyrinthe reprend le
même principe, mais de
façon différente.
Avec un autre arpège
et des tonalités
majeures et mineures qui
s’enchainent en
s’alternant
d’une façon
naturelle par le biais
d’une légère
mutation, nous égarant
dans les méandres des
tonalités, pour enfin
nous retrouver dans le
ton original, nous
délivrant ainsi de ce
grand labyrinthe (do,
lam, ré, sim, mi,
do#m, fa#, ré#m, lab,
fam et
do).

It’
s a beautiful journey
through the tones that I
offer you with these two
pieces.
The first
The Stations of the Cross
express the 14 scenes of
the Passion of Christ
through a simple arpeggio
and 14 different tones.
The 12 minor keys which
begin the work in a
perfectly natural way (D,
A, E, B, F#, C#, G#, D#,
Bb, F, C, G) are followed
by two major keys (D and
the) who come conclude
the work as a triumphant
deliverance.
The
second piece Labyrinthe
uses the same principle,
but in a different way.
With another arpeggio and
major and minor tones
which follow one another
alternating in a natural
way through a slight
mutation, leading us
astray in the meanders of
the tones, to finally
find ourselves in the
original tone, we thus
delivering from this
great labyrinth (do, lam,
re, sim, mi, do#m, fa#,
re#m, ab, fam and
do).
I hope that
the discoverers of these
pieces will have the same
pleasure that I had in
composing them for
them.

guitar sonata Kimberley
was composed in 2006 and
dedicated to Petri
Kumela. It is
Korpijaakko's fist piece
for the guitar, and the
composers gives credit to
the commissioner, who
untiringly and
long-sufferingly solved
the challenges posed by
the musical ideas and
conjured forth timbral
shades. Including a
tribute to Debussy, a
playful scherzo and some
shameless flirting with a
flamenco the four
movement sonata arrives
at a spectacular
conclusion.

Korpijaakko
studied at the Tampere
Conservatory
1997–2007, majoring
in composition from 2001
onwards. For most of the
time he was a pupil of
Jouni Kaipainen, but he
was also taught by Juhani
Nuorvala and Hannu
Pohjannoro. Korpijaakko
stresses the importance
of harmony, resonant
material and harmonic
hierarchy, by which he
means harmony as a
fundamental progressive
element of the piece. His
aim in handling his
motifs is to use his
material sparingly. In
this respect he
specifically wants to be
a kindred spirit to
Beethoven. Everything
that will later appear in
the work must be derived
from the core thematic
and harmonic elements
– or whatever one
likes to call them. Most
important is, however, to
create a steady stream of
