Antonio Salieri (1750 - 1825) Italie Antonio Salieri est un musicien italien, né à Legnago dans la province de Vérone le 18 août 1750 et mort à Vienne le 7 mai 1825 à 74 ans. Il occupe une place importante dans l'histoire de la musique classique. Sa vie et son œuvre, aujourd'hui oubliées du grand public, ne sont souvent à présent que vaguement entraperçues à travers la légende de sa rivalité avec Mozart.
Né à Legnago, le jeune Antonio étudie dès 15 ans le chant et la théorie à Venise. Son maître, Florian Gassmann, l'emmène à Vienne en 1766. Il lui enseigne la composition et le présente à Metastase et à Gluck. Gassmann est un important personnage à Vienne et c'est grâce à lui que Salieri se prépare à un avenir prestigieux. Il profite aussi du soutien de Gluck qui n'hésite pas à proposer Les Danaïdes sous son propre nom à l'académie de Musique de Paris, avant de révéler le nom du compositeur.

À la mort de Gassmann en 1774, il est nommé compositeur de la cour et directeur de l'opéra italien, puis en 1788, maître de chapelle de l'empereur.
Il se rend à Milan, Venise, Rome et Paris pour les représentations de ses opéras.
Personnalité incontournable de la vie musicale viennoise de son époque, Salieri est l'ami de Gluck et de Haydn et entretient des relations avec de nombreux autres compositeurs et musiciens importants, notamment à travers ses activités de pédagogue. Certains de ses nombreux élèves deviennent plus tard célèbres : Beethoven, Schubert, Giacomo Meyerbeer mais aussi le tout jeune Liszt ; d'autres marquent plus ou moins leur époque comme Hummel, Antoine Reicha, Ignaz Moscheles, Carl Czerny, Franz Xaver Süßmayr et Franz Xaver Wolfgang Mozart (le second fils de Mozart).

musical competition
commissioned by the
emperor Joseph II took
place on 7 February 1786
as part of a festival in
the orangery of the
Schönbrunn palace. A
German Singspiel ensemble
performed Mozart’s
“Schauspieldirektor”
whilst Antonio
Salieri’s “Prima la
musica e poi le parole”
was performed by the
Italian court singers and
musicians. This charming
opera satire belongs to
the genre of
“metamelodramma” in
which the opera itself
becomes the subject of
the action. The people
who are part of an opera
production, for example
the librettist, composer
and prima donna, appear
as characters on the
stage and are presented
in a humorous
self-reflection. In this
‘theatre about
theatre’ Salieri
parodies the music from
Giuseppe Sarti’s
“Giulio Sabino” in
his insert arias, thus
playing on the music
which was totally
familiar with the
audience of the time. By
reflecting on the
musical-dramatic style of
that period and
discussing whether ‘the
word’ or ‘the
music’ should take
priority, this
masterpiece is considered
to be an early forerunner
to Richard Strauss’s
“Capriccio”. T
