Brother of John Hopkins, Edward began his musical career by singing in the choir at the Chapel Royal. He later played the organ at Mitcham, Surrey; St. Peter?s, Islington; and St. Luke?s, Berwick Street. In 1843, he became organist at Temple Church in London, where he played over half a century.
