Bach arranged Giovanni
Battista Pergolesi’s
well-known Stabat Mater
for performances at
Leipzig’s Thomaskirche.
Bach replaced the old
liturgical sequence of
the original with a
rhymed version in German
of the 51st Psalm, Tilge,
Höchster, meine Sünden
(God, annull all my
transgression) (available
from Carus under Carus
35.302).Both
Pergolesi’s composition
and Bach’s arrangement
have only two solo vocal
parts (soprano and alto).
As early as the 18th
century, the tradition
developed of performing
individual movements of
the Stabat mater
chorally, since some
movements literally
demand a choir. The
presented edition now
also offers this
possibility for Bach’s
version Tilge, Höchster,
meine Sünden. Jörn
Bartels has created
choral versions for
verses 3, 5-7 and 10-15
by adding male voices
based on the basso
continuo as well as
Bach’s original viola
part.- Bach's
adaptation of the
poignant Stabat Mater by
Pergolesi- Suitable
for small choirs and
ensembles. Score and

Pergolesi - It. - Intro
in It/Eng -.
Some
few months after
returning to Naples from
Rome, where he had gone
to follow the premiere of
L'Olimpiade at the Teatro
Tordinona during the 1735
carnival season, Giovanni
Battista Pergolesi --
notwithstanding the
quickened pace of the
disease that would soon
bring his brief life to a
close -- presented the
public with a new work,
Il Flaminio, a commedeja
pe' mmuseca set to a
libretto by Gennarantonio
Federico. The opera was
staged as the second of
season that fall at the
Teatro Nuovo sopra Toledo
(one of three traditional
venues, together with the
Teatro dei Fiorentini and
the Teatro della Pace,
dedicated to the
production of opere
buffe), where it met with
a generally favorable
reception. The edition
includes a historical
Introduction, a
description of all the
sources considered and a
Commentary with critical
notes and information
related to specific
problems of performance
practice.

The Missa
in F of 1734 for two or
four choirs is probably
Pergolesi's most
important work for choir
and orchestra. The
nickname Missa Romana was
added later in reference
to a performance given in
Rome during Pergolesi's
lifetime. This
Urtext edition presents
the work for the first
time in the four-choir
version that Pergolesi
wrote for the above
mentioned performance in
Rome. Choirs III and
IV are reproduced in
smaller type and are
added to the version for
double choir in order to
intensify the overall
sound. This allows
the work to be performed
not only with two choirs
but also in the
delightful enlarged
version for four
choirs. Rounding off
the edition are an
informative Foreword
(Eng/Ger) and a Critical
Commentary
(Eng). - First
publication with choirs
III and IV - Can be
performed with both two
or four choirs -
Idiomatic, well-presented
piano reduction.
