In juli 1872
vertrok vanuit de Noorse
haven Tromsø het
zeilstoomschip Admiral
Tegetthoff, met aan boord
de Oostenrijks-Hongaarse
Noordpoolexpeditie van
Julius von Payer en Carl
Weyprecht. Doel: het
vinden van de
Noordoostelijke Doorvaart
voor schepenvan de
Atlantische Oceaan naar
de Grote Oceaan.Eind
augustus, eerder dan
verwacht, kwam het schip
vast te zitten in het
ijs. De bemanning
verkende vervolgens het
gebied ten noordwesten
van Nova Zembla. Maar in
de zomer van 1873 brak
het schip nietlos uit het
pakijs, zoals men had
gehoopt. Wel ontdekte het
team in die periode een
nieuwe archipel, die
Frans Jozefland werd
genoemd. Na een tweede
poolwinter vol
ontberingen zat het schip
nog steeds muurvast. De
bemanningsleden besloten
deTegetthoff op te geven
en met sleden en
reddingssloepen terug te
keren naar de bewoonde
wereld. Half augustus
1874 bereikten ze de open
zee - en twee weken later
het vasteland van
Rusland. Wonderwel kostte
de expeditie aan slechts
één lid hetleven.De
uitgebreide verslagen die
er van de expeditie zijn
inspireerden de
Oostenrijkse schrijver
Christoph Ransmayr ruim
honderd jaar later tot
het schrijven van zijn
roman Die Schrecken des
Eises und der Finsternis.
Toen het Gelders
FanfareOrkest componist
Harrie Janssen vroeg een
werk te schrijven ter
gelegenheid van het
25-jarig jubileum en de
deelname aan het Wereld
Muziek Concours 2013 in
Kerkrade, had Janssen al
enige tijd het idee om
een stuk te schrijven
voor orkest enspreekstem.
Het verhaal van Ransmayr,
een van Janssens’
lievelingsauteurs, bleek
een zeer geschikte basis
te zijn. Het heeft alle
ingrediënten voor een
opbouw in spanning en
sfeer - en voor de nodige
interactie tussen orkest
en spreker, die in
hetkader van de
verklankte gebeurtenissen
op elkaar kunnen
reageren. Wie met de ogen
dicht luistert naar De
verschrikkingen van het
ijs en de duisternis,
ziet de Admiral
Tegetthoff hopeloos
vastgeklemd tussen de
dreigende ijsmassa’s,
hetgeploeter van de
mannen in het duister van
de poolwinter en het
betoverende kleurenspel
van het noorderlicht.
