Robert Schumann (1810 - 1856) was a famous German composer of the romantic period. In 1849 he composed “Fünf Stücke im Volkston” (Five Pieces in Popular Style) for Violoncello and piano, published in 1851 as opus 102. The series was devoted to Andreas Grabau (1808 – 1884), a cellist of the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig. Despite the fact that Schumann in his youth himself played cello, these pieces are the only original compositions for cello and piano by him. In his later period after 1949 Schumann devoted himself to the composition of smaller pieces like romances, fantasy pieces or character pieces. Volkston in these pieces means reminiscences to Hungarian, Nordic and other folk music. Already during Schumann’s lifetime certain arrangements (e. g. for violin and piano) of the pieces appeared. Here we present arrangements for clarinet in A or basset horn and piano. Because the piano part remains unchanged, parts of actual editions (e. g. Breitkopf & Härtel, IMC New York 1520, or the edition in free-scores for cello and piano) can be used.
