Originally composed for viola da gamba, these magnificent sonatas are performed by internationally acclaimed artists Kate Dillingham and Jory Vinikour. Melding innate comprehension of historically informed performance practices with modern sensibilities, these artists honor the storied tradition of great artists of the past while maintaining a degree of period-appropriate stylishness. Ms. Dillingham's interest in the sonatas stemmed from her work with legendary cellist and teacher, Bernard Greenhouse. During her preparation for a New York recital, Greenhouse offered her his yellowed and fraying copy of the sonatas for further study. Greenhouse's copy was the result of his collaboration with the pedagogue Diran Alexanian and Maestro Pablo Casals.Having this score in her possession gave Dillingham a true connection to the long and very personal tradition of interpreting and performing the music of Bach, and inspired her to make this recording. In the classical tradition, Ms. Dillingham and Mr. Vinikour are part of a lineage that connects the past to the present, recipients of a golden thread that weaves through generations of artists and informs what is possible to convey through music. Music that is as potent today as it was when it was composed. |
