This French composer was born near the city of Saint-Étienne, in the Loire. At the age of six his family moved to Paris due to his father's ill-health. In the French capital Massenet's mother started teaching piano, he was one of her pupils. During his musical studies he worked as a timpanist at the Théâtre Lyrique, and also as a pianist in the Café de Belleville. Some of his teachers did not think him suited to a career in music, but he persevered and at the age of twenty he won the coveted "Grand Prix de Rome" prize with his composition the cantata "David Rizzio". Élégie is a piece featured in the theatre work Les Érinnyes by Jules Massenet. It debuted in France in 1873.
