Georges Bizet composed the incidental music to Alphonse Daudet's play L'Arlésienne (usually translated as 'The Girl from Arles'). The first performance of the play was on 1 October 1872 at the Vaudeville Theatre. The music consists of 27 numbers for voice, chorus and small orchestra. Bizet himself played the harmonium backstage at the first performance. Georges Bizet (1838 – 1875) was a French composer best known for his operas. He was a brilliant student and was accepted to the Conservatoire de Paris at the age of 9 years. He subsequently won many prizes including the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1857. An outstanding pianist he nevertheless chose not to capitalize on this skill and rarely performed in public. Bizet's opera Carmen was delayed due to concerns that the themes of betrayal and murder contained therein would be offensive to audiences. It was finally premiered on 3 March 1875.
