Added by magataganm, 14 May 2012 I created this simplified English Handbell arrangement for the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church (SVUMC) from "America the Beautiful" (UMH # 696) an American patriotic song. The original lyrics (although not included in this arrangement) to this beautiful song were written by Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929), a professor of English literature at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, after an inspiring trip to the top of Pikes Peak, Colorado in 1893. Her poem, America the Beautiful first appeared in print in The Congregationalist, a weekly journal, on July 4, 1895. The music (from a piece named "Materna,") was composed by Samuel A. Ward in 1882, nearly a decade before the poem was written. Sheet central : | America the Beautiful (14 sheet music) | |
