The Italian libretto was written by Ranieri de' Calzabigi and was inspired by the play "Alcestis" by Euripides. The Burgtheater in Vienna, Austria saw the premiere of this opera on the 26 December 1767. This music is written in the key of C major which has no sharps or flats.
