Added by douglas-brooks-davies, 13 Dec 2013 The Adagietto's gently romantic, almost wistful, main theme insists on being heard over increasing protests from the lower strings. They all eventually agree on a unison couple of bars which lead to a C major quasi-march in which the violas and cellos attempt to carry off a similarly romantic tune to an orthodox pizzicato accompaniment from the violins and basses. The whole things ends up somewhat skewed before the main theme returns in modified form. It is followed by a lively (very lively!) Presto scurry for strings that is, in effect, a rondo which scampers through various spiky moods. Challenging on the fingers! |
