Added by alastair-lewis, 21 Jul 2023 During the Baroque era a musical piece known as a prelude generally served as an introduction to the main body of a musical work, while in the Romantic era a prelude might be a piece of music that stands alone. It often has a small number of rhythmic and melodic motifs that are embellished throughout the work. This prelude by Henry Purcell, served as an introduction to his Suite no. 5 for keyboard. It is largely written as a two-part contrapuntal piece, and other than some modulations into the dominant key of C major, remains in the home key of F major. |
