The Sarabande is part of From Holberg's Time - Suite in
the Old Style (Norwegian Fra Holbergs tid - Suite i
gammel stil) Op. 40. It is a five-movement suite in G
major by Edvard Grieg, which he originally composed for
piano and in better known in a version for string
orchestra written by Grieg himself. Grieg composed the
suite to commemorate the 200th birthday of the
Danish-Norwegian poet Ludvig Holberg in 1884.

Die Sarabande gehört zu "Aus Holbergs Zeit – Suite
im alten Stil" (norwegisch Fra Holbergs tid – Suite i
gammel stil) op. 40. Sie ist eine fünfsätzige Suite
in G-Dur von Edvard Grieg, die er ursprünglich für
Klavier komponierte und in einer von Grieg selbst
geschriebenen Version für Streichorchester bekannter
wurde. Grieg komponierte die Suite anlässlich des
Jubiläums zum 200. Geburtstag des
dänisch-norwegischen Dichters Ludvig Holberg im Jahr
1884.
Formal ist der Stil der Musik den typischen höfischen
Tanz- und Liedformen des frühen 18. Jahrhunderts, also
zu Lebzeiten Holbergs, nachempfunden, während die
melodisch-harmonischen Stilmittel deutlich
neoklassizistisch sind. Anders ausgedrückt, sie blickt
mit einem „romantischen Gefühl“ auf die Musik der
Klassik.
