Common to this form model is a recurring section (A) that alternates with other musical formations (B, C, D, E, etc.). Toccata (from Italian toccare "to hit, touch, touch") is one of the oldest names for instrumental pieces, especially for keyboard instruments, but mostly of free musical structure, in the character of a written improvisation, which usually alternates between fast passages in short note values and full-voiced chords . The shape first appeared in the late Renaissance. It has its origins in northern Italy. |
