Added by bernard-dewagtere, 28 Jan 2021 Ave Maria is a melody by Charles Gounod. Originally, this aria is an improvisation by Gounod on the piano on the first prelude to the first book of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. From this improvisation, the great pianist Zimmermann, future father-in-law of Gounod, produced a version for violin accompanied by a small choir. It was only later that the arrangement for violin (or cello) and piano (or harmonium) was made under the title of "Meditation", intended to be played in concert. It was again Zimmermann and the publisher Heugel who edited the score for what was to become "Ave Maria de Gounod". Indeed, Zimmermann gave this melody to the voice by adapting the text of the classical Latin version of Ave Maria (source: Wikipedia).
