The Rigadoon became popular during the reign of King Louis XIV of France in the 17th century. It had originated as a folkdance in southern provinces of France like Vivarais, Languedoc, Dauphiné, and Provence. The music is similar to another dance music called the bourrée, but it is rhythmically simpler.
