Saved by Grace
This isn’t one of Fanny Crosby’s most famous hymns, but its tune was rather waltz-like—which made it very conducive to waltz styles, specifically Chopin’s. Opportunities to practice writing like Chopin should never be passed up, and I jumped on this one as soon as I saw the hymn. To take advantage of this, I tampered with the meter a bit. It’s in ¾ in the hymnal, but it’s twice as quick—which means the quarter notes are written as eight notes and the dotted halves are written as dotted quarters in the hymnal. Thus, this arrangement has twice as many measures. However, the way the tune was written, it just made sense musically to do it this way.

Let’s not forget the words, though. The hymn is about going to Heaven someday, and what it will be like when we get there. However, in all the celebration, Crosby makes sure to remind us why we were going there—God’s grace in offering salvation to those who trust in His sacrifice. The words are as follows.

1. Some day the silver cord will break,
And I no more as now shall sing;
But O the joy when I shall wake
Within the palace of the King!
2. Some day my earthly house will fall—
I cannot tell how soon ‘twill be;
But this I know—my All in All
Has now a place in Heav’n for me.
3. Some day, when fades the golden sun
Beneath the rosy-tinted west,
My blessed Lord will say, “Well done!”
And I shall enter into rest.
4. Some day—till then I’ll watch and wait,
My lamp all trimmed and burning bright,
That when my Savior opes the gate,
My soul to Him may take its flight.

Chorus: And I shall see Him face to face,
And tell the story—Saved by grace;
And I shall see Him face to face,
And tell the story—Saved by grace.

I hope you enjoy!
