| Added by cdavis64davis, 04 Sep 2022 On July 2, 1982, Larry Walters inflated 45 weather balloons, attached them to a lawnchair and ascended into the skies of Southern California. At 4,000 feet, he entered Long Beach airport air space, disrupting air traffic. He carried a BB gun in order to pop the balloons as necessary for a controlled descent, but dropped it after about 20 minutes. He got as high as 16,000 feet before descending unharmed some 45 minutes later, his "aircraft" entangled in power lines. He won a Darwin Award Honorable Mention, being unqualified for the main Darwin Award as he failed to comply with the award's requirement that the recipient's genes must be permanently removed from the gene pool. | |||
