When Grieg studied at the Konservatorium in Leipzig
since 1858, he visited the Grave of the German Poet
Christian Fürchtegott Gellert at the cemetery there.
Gellert was the most widely read german author of his
time and he has been Professor for Poetry at the
University of Leipzig until his death in 1769. Goethe
et al. were his students. Gellert also met the family
Mozart at person and many of his poems were set to
music by CPE Bach, Haydn and Beethoven (Gellert-Lieder
op. 48).
