Added by kheidtmann, 23 Oct 2023 Hortus Musicus is a collection of 6 Sonatas for 2 violins, viola da gamba and basso continuo composed by Johann Adam Reincken, who was a famous organist at Hamburg (Germany). Bach knew him personally and may have taken some some lessons from him, when Bach was at the senior high school in Lüneburg near Hamburg. It is said that Reincken was the highest paid organist north of the Alps. He was probably a co-founder of the opera in Hamburg (Opera at the Gänsemarkt (goose market) square) in 1768. Later on Händel, Telemann, Böhm, Graupner, Mattheson, Steffani and other famous musicians work there or composed operas for this institution. Probably also out of reverence for Reincken Johann Sebastian Bach arranged one of the sonatas from the Hortus Musicus for keyboard instruments in 1705. Sheet central : | Sonate en La mineur (10 sheet music) | |
