Published by Luis Cardoso (A0.934366). Imaginary beings 3 come from a subject that fascinates me, especially after reading Jorge Luis Borges's Book of Imaginary Beings. I decided to dedicate some of my compositions to this issue. This is the third composition with that title and only includes Portuguese imaginary beings: 1 - OLHAPIM - Very small entity, a sort of ghost or goblin. It has four eyes, two forward and two backward, to see all around; 2 - JANA - Spirit who makes clothes for the night if you let cake for him. 3 - TRASGO - Imaginary being of small stature, which uses red cap and possesses supernatural powers. This work was requested to be premiered by Wesley Ferreira. Was composed between January and April 2012.

The possum is an Australian native animal. It is a nocturnal animal that has adapted well to city life, being quite happy living in the roofs of houses. This piece represents the possum creeping about at night time looking for food. It is inspired by an experience I had with a baby possum one night, when I woke up to the strings on my grand piano being played. The young possum had come down my chimney and was looking for an escape from the rain. It was also fairly unhappy with being placed outside again.

There follows a slower, more thoughtful passage with the instruments moving together in the main, before returning to the original tempo. The third part is much spikier and altogether more chaotic within a staccato, canon figure being conspicuous before calming down into a lyrical, descending passage exploring some harmonic modulations. It ends with a reprise of the third theme before coming to a loud climax. The piece lasts for about three and a half minutes.

The 2nd Edition became widely popular and used by clarinetists around the world, and this new 3rd Edition adds 127 fingerings for a total offering of over 300 fingerings through four and a half octaves in quarter-tones for clarinet, from written E3 to A7.Author's Notes:Ten years have passed since releasing the 2nd Edition of my Bass Clarinet Quarter-Tone Fingering Charts, which coincided with the first release of a chart for soprano clarinet. I’m now already on the 3rd Edition of both the clarinet and bass clarinet charts, which are being released simultaneously, following the recent release of a compilation of three separate charts for Leblanc, Selmer, and Eppelsheim contrabass clarinets.The first obvious change in the 3rd Edition is to the title. I have added Altissimo to better reflect that these charts are not only useful for their quarter-tones, but also for their stratospheric range. The charts have also had a formatting revision and are now being published through AMA Editions, available in print as well as digital forms.The next big change is the addition of 127 quarter-tone and altissimo fingerings, and some corrections and revisions to the existing ones. With these revisions come some new notations of the diagrams. One of these is the use of grey-colored keys, first used in the contrabass clarinet charts, to indicate keys which may be added to help tuning, response, and/or resonance. Rather than creating a new diagram for every possible combination, I thought it would be more effective to show the fundamental fingering in black, with the grey keys as possible additions dependent on what works best for a player and their instrument.

Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. The Fifth book of madrigals starts to see much more development towards operatic style writing, with more songs being strung together to form scenas and with the addition of accompaniment on instruments. Some of these songs can be written by incorporating the accompaniment into the parts for those instruments which are resting, some will require more than a quintet. Certainly as we get into the next three books, reduction to a quintet will become increasingly more difficult, if not impossible. The final song from book 5 shows quite an advance on the previously (relatively) simple writing. Here we have a full SATB ensemble plus a quite detailed continuo. Questi vaghi (These wandering little birds) also has a more complex structure, being, by itself a scena, split into sections by ritornelli which he calls Sinfonias. At this stage, they are by no means substantial enough to be considered preludes or interludes, but merely dances between the sections of the song. Because of this added complexity, I have had to arrange the piece for a 9-part brass choir. There is some overlap and crossover between the continuo and choral parts to accommodate the different groupings needed for each section. The ritornello sections need to be played more lightly and in a skipping style to add contrast between the 'vocal sections'.
