This appealing, bluesy trio the hymn For the Beauty of the Earth (DIX) combines the familiar tune with 12-bar blues in an arrangement sure to please congregation and recital audiences alike. It opens with a riff on the first notes of the melody over a standard blues progression, then tosses the tune between instruments. Motives from the melody are playfully exchanged through modulations before returning to the home key for the light-hearted ending. Scored for violin, viola and piano or alto and baritone saxophones and piano; full score, string, piano, and saxophone parts included. For advanced intermediate performers, this is sheer fun from start to finish, and very suitable for Christmas concerts. It has an optional organ part if so desired, but will work perfectly well without. Originally written for two viola da braccio, two viola da gamba, cello, bass violin and continuo, this transcription despite its difficulty may actually be accessible to more advanced non-professional quartets.
