Tapping your feet to the rhythm is simply not acceptable. But I’ve always thought that classical music could be danceable - something that DJs can play at a club and you can move your body to.≪Tree dance≫, as the title suggests, is a musical piece featuring marimba and piano expressing the way trees dance in the wind. The music is almost like the classical version of craftwork, combining four-on-the-floor beats of techno music with the sharp sounds of modern music and organic poetry.I hope that the colorful musical notes on the score will be given life to and grow in this concert hall, creating a feast of dancing trees. This arrangement has been performed at concerts and weddings by it's creator, Nick Baron, in his own marimba duo, and it is now here on sale for the first time.Seal's masterpiece is poignant, elegant and soulful; these characteristics shared by the marimba with its soft attack and warm resonance make it a perfect fit.The arrangement follows the form of Seal's original but there is creativity in the marimba writing; for example the way a groove is often created between the ostinato rhythms of the two marimbas to suggest the presence of a rhythm section. Both parts are for four mallets and it is written in the key of C#. This arrangement would be an excellent addition to a conservatoire-level concert programme. Requirements: two players, four mallets each, two 4.3 octave marimbas.

For the Theme I used an extract from the 1906 hit pop song I Love You Truly by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, a celebrated female composer at the turn of century. With each variation the melody and rhythm evolve further from the original Theme. The tempo also increases slightly as you progress to each new variation. The first variation adds chromatic embellishment, the second variation syncopates the rhythm, and the third variation uses triplet patterns. More life is added to your romance with each variation!Each person who has heard this piece hears something different, but in all of them it conjures up vintage courting; and most say it would fit a soundtrack to an early silent movie. So, at heart, this piece is still a turn of the century love ballad, but livened up and fused with subtle influences from other styles and periods. Perfect for weddings where you are trying to please everyone; a bit pop, a bit classical, and totally romantic!Works equally well in a classroom or lesson studying Theme and Variations. With simple pulsating rhythm and undulating harmonies, the music grows from nothing into a moment of heartfelt contemplation before dissipating into the aether.Once the performer is comfortable with the flow of the music, they are free to adapt (improvise) the length of phrases and repetitions, as long as the overall arch shape of the music is not lost.Mallets should be as soft and warm as possible while still allowing for some articulation at louder dynamics. At no time should they sound harsh.

In terms of character, it begins with a slow meditative repetition of two melodic ideas. One is played as single-handed rolls by the right-hand while the other is a slowly developing melody played by the left-hand. Because the phrases of these two ideas do not align, their interaction creates a kaleidoscopic shifting of harmonic colors. A faster middle section continues developing both the harmonic and rhythmic interaction between the two hands, but in a more active and syncopated way. After a series of dramatic outbursts, the original meditative quality returns and the piece ends quietly with a return of material from the first section.

Angels We Have Heard On High encapsulates the birth of Jesus Christ as narrated in the Gospel of Luke. The flowing second part of this carol portrays the shepherds’ wonder as they encounter a multitude of angels singing and praising. The spiritual renewal brought about by the birth of the Christ child is given in What Child Is This? Sung to the tune of the traditional English song Greensleeves, its haunting quality has made it one of the most popular of Christmas carols. And focusing on the immediacy of the Child’s entrance into the world, Away in a Manger has become the most loved of all American Christmas carols. The medley opens with an eight-measure introduction that immediately establishes the Christmas spirit, and then moves on to Angels We Have Heard on High. The binary form of this section should suggest to the performers two contrasting manners of execution, one involving brisk, rhythmic strokes and the other more legato in nature. At the second indicated rehearsal number What Child Is This? introduces a new key and new meter for new melodic content. The score shapes these phrases with dynamic changes, which should be observed with care. The dynamic arches and divided eighth note passages will enhance the impetus of a rolling ternary meter The medley’s final selection, Away in a Manger, begins at measure sixty-seven. A light and delicate approach to execution should create an innocent, child-like characterization. The final cadence of this selection is expanded to a bolder conclusion. Players and conductor may wish to experiment with a dead stroke on the last soft note, to artistically suggest that the music may be experienced for a moment even after it is concluded. This medley will be especially effective programmed on a winter holiday concert. Duration is 2:21.
