Piano Solo - Level 5 - SKU: A0.873046 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary. Score. 11 pages. Sally Whitwell #6119391. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873046). A Week in November… and what a week it was! It was the week of the US Presidential Election 2020. As I write these words, the absurdist tantrums of the Trump-Pence campaign versus the reasoned compassion of team Biden-Harris continues even well after the results have been called in the Democrats’ favour. There will not be the usual respectful concession speech and transition of power. I worry every day about how these next few months will be so very difficult, maybe even dangerous, for my American friends. Those convoys of flag waving Trumpists gleefully, openly, encouraged by their ‘leader’, attempting to block the democratic process was horrifying to witness. Was America on the brink of civil war? It still doesn’t seem far fetched to think that as I sit in my studio on the other side of the world, feeling helpless. The only thing I felt that I could do for my friends over there was to offer them a way to feel safe and loved in the moment, a bit of musical mindfulness. It was in this spirit that I wrote the second movement of this work, subtitled A Pocket Full of Calm. My excellent pianist friends Erica Sipes (USA) and Sandra Mogensen (Canada) adopted my little tune, recorded it on their social media to share said moment in the moment as it were. I hope it helped. I mean, if I can bring to even just one person some sense of calm solidarity, I’m happy with that. The fifth movement in the set, Victorious, resolute, but gracious, was a stream-of-consciousness creative response to the Biden Harris victory and the way they handled it so eloquently, so humbly, how they gave the world a sense of optimism once more. For a long while, I’d felt that I probably wouldn’t be welcome in America. As a mixed race, queer woman I was the antithesis of everything they valued. But now, people like me over there can feel human again. The relief! As for the other days of that week in November, they are part of a continuing series of daily composition exercises I started back in October in an effort to end a lengthy period of pandemic-induced creative block. Using a combination of exercises from Music Composition Toolbox (Barbeler/Blom/Hindson) and Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies I’ve been able to find my creativity again. Starting a composition ‘habit’ is the best thing I’ve done for my writing all year and is how I mean to continue for a long time. Sally Whitwell12 November 2020

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1157142 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Classical,Contemporary. Octavo. 15 pages. Sally Whitwell #757469. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.1157142). Written in the Stars -- text and music by Sally Whitwell Written in the Stars was originally conceived in the aftermath of the 2019-2020 bushfire season, the most destructive Australia has yet seen. At the time, we thought things couldn’t get worse, but then followed more extreme weather events, insect and rodent plagues, and a deadly pandemic that brought the world to its knees. All these things are connected, the result of humanity’s exploitative relationship with the planet and its other inhabitants. But we continue to deny the problems and to fail to act. As a species, in our more optimistic moments, we talk about having great opportunities to reinvent, that to live the status quo means that we will be faced with an untenable future. Talking about it is one thing but as far as I see it, we are not taking any opportunities to act. It is clear that we do not learn from our mistakes. As Spanish American writer George Santayana once said “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.†It is from this notion that this song was born. Written in the Stars is about society’s propensity to go through cycles of behaviour, never learning from the mistakes of the past. Written in the Stars was originally commissioned by Adelaide Chamber Singers, directed by Carl Crossin. Sally Whitwell January 2023.

Soprano voice,Vocal Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.873025 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary. 14 pages. Sally Whitwell #3867185. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873025). Composer’s Note - The BirdsI lived for a couple of years in a little top floor Art Deco apartment in Sydney’s Kings Cross. There were always birds sitting on my window sill because of the huge Jacaranda tree outside. I was at a bit of a crossroads in my life at that time, and would spend at least an hour daily walking in the neighbourhood, along those twisting, sloping streets and slowly eroding sandstone staircases so typical of Sydney’s harbourside suburbs. On the wall by such a staircase very close to my home was a tiny red spray painted bird with little music notes emanating from his beak. His was a constant presence in my life, I really rather liked him.Birds seemed to be making appearances everywhere in my life at that time, which I took as some kind of message from the universe. I was reading quite a lot of Christina Rossetti that year too, enjoying her writings about birds and all that they symbolised for her; beauty and sadness, hope and joy. There was a quiet optimism in her words, sometimes veiled but always present, which propelled me to write this song cycle T he Birds.-- Sally Whitwell

Composer’s Note - To Your ShoreMy cultural heritage is mixed: I was born of a Caucasian Australian father of Welsh descent and a Chinese mother from Penang who settled in Australia after some years in Brunei. Thus I find myself frequently pondering the immigrant experience. I wrote the text of To Your Shore to act as kind of twin soliloquies: the first from a person on a boat catching first sight of land, the second from another person standing on the shore ready to welcome the ship they spy on the horizon. I tried to evoke a mixture of trepidation and hope you might feel whilst on your way to a new life in a place where you don’t yet speak the language, where society’s customs and traditions are different, where the climate and the environment feel so very foreign to you, but where you might have a chance at building a happier life.-- Sally Whitwell

I composed Dissolved over the stiflingly hot and humid Sydney summer of 2018-2019. It’s all about finding relief from the heat by plunging your body into the sea at twilight. I went with some friends to Sydney’s Coogee Beach one late afternoon, just as the sun was setting. We parked in a side street and walked barefoot across the road, still warm from a full day of blazing sunlight, over the prickly grass, down the concrete steps onto the soft sand and into the ocean. The feeling of being cleansed by this salt water was so strong, I felt compelled to write a song about it. Sally Whitwell Long shadows stretch into still summer nights The atmosphere lays heavy, liquefied Warmth rising from the asphalt, once alight From the sun, now disappearing Drawn to dark water, we become amphibian Bare toes swallowed by waves on wet sand Deionisation, we hold it in our hands And the fever’s disappearing We are dissolved The water absolving us We are evolving On the ever revolving earth Ever evolving, revolving, dissolving Water abating and we’re dissipating As the world turns and our hearts burn With love

Choral Choir (2-Part) - Level 2 - SKU: A0.1099392 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Children,Classical,Instructional. Octavo. 9 pages. Sally Whitwell #703279. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.1099392). Do you want to build a rocket? was originally composed for a wonderful group of children I worked with at the Young Music Society Winter School in Canberra. The first day that I went in to meet them, I sat down with them on the floor and asked them what kind of performance they wanted to build. It was around the time that the Disney animated feature Frozen was very popular with kids. Or not, as it turns out, because one little boy’s hand shot up straight away and he said: “Tell you what I don’t wanna build: a stupid snowman!†He suggested we build a rocket instead. So that’s what we did. It’s a song about the wonder and curiosity we feel about the universe, of our desire to explore it, and of the determination and grit required to achieve that dream. It’s some very hard yards to build a rocket and to learn to fly it, but our dreams are always worth the work! I hope you have fun with this song. Teachers, I invite you to get as theatrical as you dare with it. In our original performance we had all these toy instruments, toy toolkits, and painted cardboard boxes. (So many boxes!). Let’s just say, if you think it’s gonna be ‘too much’, it’s probably exactly the right amount. Sally Whitwell August 2022.

Composer’s Note - EchoI greatly enjoy working in community music. Really, I’m happy to work with musicians of any age or level of experience. Anyone. I’m just as happy to play in New York with Philip Glass as I am to play Mexican Woodpecker with a room full of eight year-olds (if you don’t know Mexican Woodpecker, that’s what the internet is for!). What really counts is commitment and enthusiasm. I worked for a while with a community choir here in Sydney, Polyphony. They have enthusiasm in buckets which, as a composer, I find very inspirational. I wrote this piece for them. It’s a bittersweet evocation to the memory of someone who has departed this world-- Sally Whitwell

Composer’s Note - Treasure ChestI was commissioned by the Canberra International Music Festival in 2016 to write a work for children’s chorus. The concert was a Mothers’ Day event, sponsored by a couple of local boutique chocolatiers, so the works on the program were all chocolate and coffee themed, including J S Bach’s Coffee Cantata and a bunch of songs from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The festival’s Artistic Director Roland Peelman asked me if I could write a new piece on this theme. So I got thinking about chocolate and about Mothers’ Day and about how when you’re a little kid and have no earnings, you still give your mum a present for her special day (that is, your dad pays for it and you sign the card!). And if it’s chocolate, you might give her your favourite chocolate instead of hers, and all you are really waiting for is for her to offer you one. When I was a child, I always used to think of chocolate boxes as treasure chests, full of shining precious things only consumed on very special occasions. Because they were such a rarity, you really had to savour each sweet taste and gooey texture. I ’m sure from this song, you’ll be able to tell that I am a big sweet tooth!-- Sally Whitwell

Composer’s Note - Some World Far From OursA principle source of inspiration for composers is surely a performer of great talent and skill. Percy Bysshe Shelley proves that this is true not only for composers but for poets as well. His dear friend Jane Williams -- the never proven conjecture is that she was actually his lover -- could sing like a bird and also play flute, harp and guitar. In S ome World Far From Ours, I so enjoyed bringing some musical life to a text that praises a musician from a poet who understands how a singing voice can transport a listener in a was that speech cannot.-- Sally Whitwell

Composer’s Note - Sifting the StarsIn 2015 I was commissioned by Sydney Philharmonia Choirs to create a Christmas show for kids. Being me, I decided that I wanted to make it a narrative show because I’m ambitious that way. It was called Cog in the Machine (a family Christmas tale with a twist) and alongside the carols was a gentle commentary on the commercialisation of the festive season, and how our priorities of family celebration are often overshadowed by the extravagance of gift giving. One of the main characters in the story is a smart, sassy teenage girl called Stella. She loves science, particularly astronomy (hence the name!) and it was therefore a family tradition for her to put the star on the top of the Christmas tree each year. This particular Christmas, she has a bit of a disagreement with her mother and as she’s putting the star on the tree, she goes into a kind of dream sequence, floating about the galaxies inside her head, trying to process her adolescent need for independence and protection in equal amounts. It’s a coming of age song.-- Sally Whitwell

Composer’s Note - Growing into meOn a particularly blustery Winter's day, I went to the National Arboretum in my home town of Canberra, Australia, with a bunch of very lovely kids from the Woden Valley Youth Choir (WVYC). Their director Alpha Gregory had asked me to come and do a composition workshop with the kids, to which I had replied with an enthusiastic YES!.I'd done this kind of thing with WVYC before, but this time around I wanted to take it somehow to the next level, to give the piece a real sense of place, a specific and experiential connection to the local community or landscape, and the Arboretum seemed a natural choice for me for an inspirational excursion. I had a family connection to it myself at the time, my cousin Emma worked there and was very passionate about it. Also, it is an outdoorsy kind of place and I have such fond memories of outdoorsy exploratory kinds of activities filling my entire childhood, a very typically Canberran thing. I'm sure the WVYC kids have a similar experience and I hope they know how lucky they are!So we put on our winter coats and scarves and hiked up the mountain, being sure to not only look at what was there, but also to listen, to touch, to smell. It was truly a multi sensory experience. Then we all went down to a local church hall and talked about what we saw and heard and smelt and the kids were just bursting with wonderful ideas for our new song. I've incorporated as many of their ideas as possible into the completed product, as well as my own over-arching theme; the oldest of the trees at the National Arboretum are only a couple of years older than some of the children in the group, so it seemed a nice parallel to make, their growing up alongside each other. It is my hope that the writing of this piece bonds these children to this important and magical place, so ripe with possibility, and that the connection is a lasting and meaningful one for them. It certainly will be for me.-- Sally Whitwell

Composer’s Note - Happy PlaceI’m a lesbian who came-of-age/came-out in the mid 1990s, which means I caught the tail end of those lesbian stereotypes you used to hear about. It made me feel like I’d never inherited The Lesbian Gene. I was never one of the herbal tea sipping, yoga loving, hemp textiles wearing, hippie happy clappy campers of that time. I had girlfriends who were and I tried to humour them sometimes but it was always a strain.I had this one girlfriend who made me go camping once, a gathering with her hippie pagan friends. It was all inoffensive enough, I was having a very nice time sitting in the shade reading my book. Rather stupidly, I made the mistake of letting someone rope me into a thing called Drumming The Boundary. They thought I’d be good at it, being a professional musician. I thought it would probably please my girlfriend if I got involved, so I agreed to go along. To my surprise, the drums they’d set up were great instruments, some really top quality djembes that you’d be paying some good money for, so I made the rash assumption that the leader of this activity actually knew what she was doing. We were instructed to start drumming a heartbeat together, whereupon I discovered that these are people who couldn’t even play a plain old crotchet beat in ensemble. But they seemed to think they were playing in time, swooning and swaying and closing their eyes to ‘feel’ the music. It was starting to make me giggle. These were presumably the same lesbians I’d seen out in Sydney nightclubs who couldn’t dance in time with an electronic beat that repeatedly hits you over the head with its obviousness?! Once I’d had that thought, I couldn’t help my giggle becoming a full-blown guffaw. The dreadlocked hempy lady in charge glared at me, telling me I needed to relax into really feeling the heartbeat. Could she not see that it was because my whole body was shaking with hysterical laughter at their arhythmic playing? Honestly...I guess I just really don’t like hippies. There, I said it out loud. I tried, I tried really hard, but I just prefer my city life. It’s my Happy Place.-- Sally Whitwell

It was the same morning that the New South Wales Rural Fire Service announced that for the first time since July 2019, the state was free of active bush and grass fires. At the time it felt quite euphoric. We’d been through a lot. Little did we know what was coming just a few days from then, when the Covid19 global pandemic reached our shores. It’s a virus that would kill millions across the world, and disable millions more, long term. It forced us, globally, into a kind of reckoning the like of which we had never experienced before. Non pharmaceutical controls like lockdowns, mask mandates, social distancing and ventilation standards were employed to keep us safe from this airborne virus, whilst scientists worked round clock to develop vaccines and treatments.Technically, the declaration of a pandemic is still active, but governments and people have somehow decided for themselves that it is all over. No one takes any precautions any more. Governments have stopped reporting statistics. People who know they are infected are going about their business with no thought for others. Meanwhile, many of the immune-compromised, the disabled, the vulnerable, are unable to safely leave their homes and engage in activities out in the world. I know this, because I am a carer for a vulnerable person. What this whole exercise has taught me is that people in the world are actually much less kind than I thought they were. Humans do not really care for each other. People attack me for wearing a mask, tell me that I’m virtue signalling and that I look ridiculous (as if I care how I look). I’ve asked questions about workplace Covid safety and been informed that it’s “a bit rich†that I’m asking at all, when everything is now safe. A friend’s diagnosed Long Covid symptoms were cruelly minimised or completely dismissed “Oh, it’s not Covid. How old are you? In your forties? It’s your hormones, it’s the menopause.†The fatal combination of sheer selfishness, rampant misinformation and DISinformation continues, whilst people waltz around spreading a deadly virus with no thought for the grief that will undoubtedly ensue. It boils down to this: if we want to continue as a species and to have a planet on which to reside, we have to stop with the Self Care and start with the Community Care. A choir is the perfect instrument for expressing these notions, through the unique power of the massed first person plural. My wish for this piece is that it spurs performer and listener alike into some kind of action. Please consider the effect your actions have on others, and on the planet, and make any changes necessary, however inconvenient or difficult they are. Otherwise, there’s really no point.Sally Whitwell 11 July 2023.

Soprano voice,Vocal Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.873026 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary. 6 pages. Sally Whitwell #3867191. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873026). Composer’s Note - Warm Where Snowflakes LieThrough my music, I try to bring to people a sense of optimism about the world. Music has the power to uplift, to exalt, to fill people with joy and hope, so I am drawn to texts that do a similar thing. Christina Rossetti’s poem The Key-Note has this optimism, even with a gentle sting in the proverbial tail. She appreciated that everything has a season, that life happens in cycles, that in the face of the darkest Winter there is always the hope of Spring, a hope made real by the appearance of the red-breasted robin in the snow. This song is for anyone who has ever felt hopeless, disenfranchised, or unable to see the light at the end of the tunnel.-- Sally Whitwell

My family were early adopters on Compact Disc technology. Whilst my school peers in the late 80s and early 90s were collecting tapes for their VHS video recorders, my family were collecting hi-fidelity CD recordings of classical masterworks. Three of these CDs stick in my mind; a period instrument performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert; a recording of the 1812 overture which boasted Real Cannons (and also warned listeners against setting the volume too high because it might damage the equipment!); and A feather on the breath of God, an album of works by Hildegard performed by Gothic Voices with soloist Emma Kirkby. Thus began my life long love affair with the life and works of Hildegard. I have been performing this particular Hildegard chant O Virtus Sapientiae in solo piano recitals since around 2014. Basically, I have been freely improvising on it, so it’s different each time. Some ideas formed during those improvisations which have really stuck in my brain. I’ve transferred some of these into this a cappella work. Sally Whitwell In una via, quae habet vitam (In one path, which gives life) O Strength of Wisdom Who circling circled, enclosing all Growing from the earth Soaring in the heights One life-giving path Of omnipresent light Laus tibi sit, sicut te decet O Sapientiae  (Praise to you, as is fitting,  O Wisdom)

Composer’s Note - She Walks in BeautyIn the summer of 2007, I fell in love. I was living in what she and I now refer to as The Fairy Treehouse, a top floor studio in a shabby chic Art Deco block in Sydney’s Kings Cross. The block was too old to have a door buzzer (!) so she’d phone when she was on her way. With great excitement I would tear down three flights of stairs (the block was also too old to have a lift) and out the front door. Whilst I waited breathlessly on the cool slate doorstep, a frisky midnight breeze would tease the edges of my swishy summer frock and... See? I can’t talk about this time without lapsing into sickeningly sugary, nostalgic language. Forgive me, I was in love. And still am.She Walks in Beauty is the first thing I ever composed and is inspired by our nocturnal courtship.-- Sally Whitwell

Composer’s Note - Choosing Our Own AdventureCanberra in the 1980s was a pretty fun place to be for a little kid. Well, i liked it. Playtime was very outdoorsy, with Lake Burley Griffin and other large tracts of bushland only twenty minutes from a nywhere, it was easy to be somewhere beautiful pretty quickly. There was lots of bike riding, roller skating, tree climbing, skipping stones on the water, and running through waist high piles of autumn leaves. The change of seasons is so colourfully vivid in Canberra, it just makes you want to be outside to taste it!I’ve tried to capture that playfulness in this song which I dedicate to my big brother James with whom I spent so many of those childhood weekends. The name of the piece pays tribute to a series of books we loved to read, Choose Your Own Adventure.-- Sally Whitwell

Choral Choir (SSA) - Level 3 - SKU: A0.873043 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary. Octavo. 7 pages. Sally Whitwell #4786509. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873043). Lux Aeterna By Sally Whitwell On 12 June, 2016, the international LGBTQ+ community was hit hard with the news of a mass shooting in one of our community’s entertainment venues, a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Forty nine people were killed, and fifty three wounded in what was deemed a terrorist attack. At the time, it was the deadliest shooting by a single gunman in United States history. I wrote this piece in the wake of that news, I suppose as a way of processing this attack on my community. The club was hosting a special ‘Latin Night’ that night, so the majority of the victims were Hispanic. Culturally, Hispanic populations have a very strong Roman Catholic tradition, so it seemed the right thing to incorporate a piece of the Catholic Requiem Mass. The Lux Aeterna is the Communion antiphon for that Mass. Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine:Cum Sanctis tuis in aeternum: quia pius es. Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis. Cum Sanctis tuis in aeternum: quia pius es. May light eternal shine upon them, O Lord, with Thy Saints for evermore: for Thou art gracious. Eternal rest give to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them: With Thy Saints for evermore, for Thou art gracious. Everlasting light shine upon them

I first met the Acacia Quartet a couple of years back, playing in a show I put together for Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, T he Beatles Unplugged. What a joy to discover a quartet of such expert musicians who are also so open to playing such a wide variety of music, from The Beatles to Brahms! I wrote this piece Winter Love for us to perform together.Composing a piece for specific performs is, I imagine, something like tailoring a bespoke suit. I wanted to give them something with which they could show off their unique versatility; creating rich, warm, blended sounds one minute and fiery, energetic, even whimsical tones the next. I didn’t want to write just a quartet at the time because, perhaps selfishly, I simply wanted to be a part of it!The title makes it seem like the work is programmatic, but it’s not. I just couldn’t think of a title for it. My partner Glennda came up with that, and I dedicate the piece to her.-- Sally Whitwell

Soprano voice,Vocal Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.873044 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary. 12 pages. Sally Whitwell #6130719. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873044). If you really pushed me to make a call, Mussorsgky’s Pictures at an Exhibition would be one of my favourite pieces in the classical repertoire. Somewhat outrageously, for a pianist, I prefer the colours and textures of the orchestrated version. I reasonably regularly listen to it, especially in transit. But to be honest, it’s not the kind of music that I perform all that often i.e. music by dead, white, male composers. I mean, it’s 2020 and as the meme says I can’t believe I still have to protest this sh*t. And I feel it too for those in the visual art world. I mean, things are a good deal better over there in contemporary art world, where women are exhibited regularly and everyone seems to embrace it without a fuss. As for women artists from centuries gone by, it’s less good news but they’re working on it. I’m reminded of the situation daily as my older brother, who is excellent at choosing gifts thoughtfully, gave me some Guerrilla Girls merchandise which I use as an iPad cover. Entitled Advantages of Being a Woman Artist, it’s a list of truths that’s pretty relatable for any creative woman. My favourite bit - Being reassured that whatever kind of art you make it will be labeled feminine. Ooft. Too real. And so I conceived of this song cycle as a kind of gift for those fighting the traditional, patriarchal structures of the entire creative sector. Three songs, inspired by three works by three wonderful Australian women artists of last century. All are depictions of scenes around Sydney Harbour. In-curve is inspired by Grace Cossington Smith’s The Bridge in-curve, a depiction of an unfinished Sydney Harbour Bridge, painted in 1930 The Code is inspired by Thea Proctor’s woodcut print Women with fans. It is thought to be a portrait of two other artists, printmakers Ethel Spowers and Eveline Syme, sitting above Rushcutters Bay. Where would we sail? is inspired by a very different view of the same location Still life and Rushcutters Bay by Margaret Olley.

Composer’s Note - DaybreakDuring the Winter of 2016, I journeyed to my hometown Canberra for a job interview and audition. It was for the head of the new Music Academy at Canberra Girls Grammar School, my old school. Which was kind of weird. As part of my specifically designed interview/audition experience, I was required to run a composition workshop, and this song Daybreak is the result of that.It was an odd experience to return to the scenes of my youth, to see how much everything had changed. So many new buildings, so many of the old buildings repurposed, so many more opportunities afforded to the girls at the school now than we could ever have dreamed in the late 80s and early 90s. It was pretty early in the morning when I arrived, the winter mist just beginning to clear to one of those perfect sunny cold Canberra days. The school is directly down the road from Parliament House, and as the mist cleared to reveal that magnificent flagpole above the treetops surrounding the school, I decided that the joy and optimism of a new day would be the perfect subject for our composing collaboration. The girls were very generous with their ideas. The song was finished within a few days and I sent it back to the school. I think they liked it? It was hard to tell from their response. I didn’t get the job. (No surprise to me, as I have almost never been successful at auditions and job interviews. Fortunately people just know my work, ask me to do stuff, and I just say yes. Haha.) But I’m a big believer in creativity as a way of healing. I still really like our song we wrote, those lovely girls and I, so I am releasing it into the wild.

Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.1085573). There are a great many songs about birds. Lovely birds. Birds who soar gracefully through the air, who sing us beautiful songs, who nurture their young in nests high in the treetops. There are fewer songs about other kinds of birds like; 1. The Cassowary. Unofficially the most dangerous bird in the world, with its long, sharp, dinosaur-like talons. Also its weird crest and strange turkey-like under-the-chin wibbly-wobbliness. What the...? 2. The Fairy Penguin. This is a bird who can’t fly at all! And it nests not in a treetop, but in a burrow underground. Huh? 3. The Cockatoo. Ok, yes, the cockatoo can soar majestically through the sky, but its song? So ugly. So with The Little Aviary I am merely attempting to redress the balance. Let’s hear it for all the birds, even the weird ones.

Flute,Piano - Level 4 - SKU: A0.873036 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary. Score and part. 11 pages. Sally Whitwell #3874647. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873036). Composer’s Note - Road TripThe inspiration for Road Trip comes from the train commute I used to make weekly from Sydney to a university teaching job in Newcastle. I so enjoyed the gentle evolution of the landscape on this journey each week; urban quickly gives way to suburban, thence to mountainous bushland tumbling down into the Hawkesbury River. The train clings to the shoreline around Brisbane Waters, sparkling blindingly in the early morning sunshine, then snakes through more bushland, cuts through leafy suburbia and finally emerges into the industrial steel heart of Newcastle.Structurally, Road Trip is a motivic evolution, a four note motif that continually evolves and extends and transforms itself, in much the same way as I feel the landscape evolves around the silver bullet of a train hurtling down the tracks.
