Hummel wrote three versions of the four-minute fantasias: the original version for basset horn as well as versions for solo bass clarinet and solo bassoon. The most effective version undoubtedly is the version for basset horn with its mystically transfigured sound which even Mozart had used for the musical reference to the world to come. Each of the three fantasias begins with a Gregorian song in praise of the Virgin Mary followed by an elaborate fantasia on this tune. Thus, Hummel bridges the period from the 17th century to the present time, from the old-fashioned religious melody to 20th-century music. 'Marianische Fantasien' are pieces of moderate difficulty, yet full of charming beauty. They will enthuse the audience both in the concert hall and in church.

Various articles in specialized journals and sites have cited the composer, such as the Flutist Quarterly (Circus Brasilis - The flute music of Sergio Roberto de Oliveira), Early Music America (Something New for Early Music), Andante.com (The heirs of Villa-Lobos), 21st Century Music, Musicabrasileira.org, etc. Sergio Roberto de Oliveira has frequently been invited to lecture at American universities, and has spoken at more than a dozen institutions including Princeton and Duke. In 2009 he was Artist-in-Residence at Duke University. In addition the USA and the UK, Oliveira's music has also been played in many countries, with invitations for concerts exclusively with his music in México, Italy and Holland (Amsterdam). The Spanish Magazine Sonograma has published 2 interviews with Sergio.Sergio is the founder and a member of the group of composers Prelúdio 21. The group is one of the most active worldwide. It holds a distinguished place in Brazilian contemporary music, having been active for 15 consecutive seasons, with a permanent series of monthly concerts since 2008. In 2011 the group released the CD String Quartets, with performances by the Quarteto Radamés Gnattali. Oliveira is also a member of the group of composers Vox Novus, based in New York.To commemorate 15 years of activity as a composer, Oliveira released a box set with 4 CDs, as well as a CD with composer Mark Hagerty, and produced the series QUINZE, with 13 concerts including his works, between July and October of 2012. More than 130 musicians, including 28 composers, participated of QUINZE (CDs and series).His discography includes 14 CDs as producer, 14 as composer, 22 as general producer, 2 as arranger and 2 as pianist. His catalog of compositions includes approximately 115 works for various ensembles, including Symphony Orchestra. Sergio Roberto de Oliveira is a member of the Latin Academy of the Arts and Science of Recording.He died from pancreatic cancer in 2017.

Asiago - the letters a-s-a-g, corresponding to the notes a, e-flat, a, g in the German musical scale, open and close the work - is a successful excursion into the complex sound combinations of percussion instruments and the mystical, sensuous tone of the violoncello, whereby the stringed instrument occasionally takes on a percussive role and the percussion is sometimes treated like a bowed. Driving rhythms pursue each other, alternating with meditative moments. Chorale fragments lead to a grand cadenza, in which the instrumentalists have the opportunity, following patterns provided, for free improvisation. The première of this work took place on 5th August, 2001 in the Duomo di S. Matteo in Asiago in northern Italy and was in the hands of Peter Sadlo and Julius Berger, who are amongst the most committed exponents of Bertold Hummel's works.Asiago is an effective examination of the wide range of possible tonal combinations between percussion instruments and the mystic and sensuous colouring of the violoncello, in which the string instrument is at times treated percussively and the percussion instruments in the manner of a string instrument. Furious rhythms alternate with meditative passages and choral fragments culminate in a large-scale cadenza in which the instrumentalists have the opportunity of free improvisation on the basis of specified models.

For each of the three movements, I began by composing anoriginal folk tune within that national style. The formal and harmoniclanguage is simple, direct, and uncluttered throughout, as is appropriate for folk music.The first movement, Highland Ballad (Scotland), begins and ends with lyrical music. The first violin part is almost identical to the original, with occasional easing. The second violin part maintains as much of the original as possible too, but without having to leave first position. The third violin part was designed for players towards the end of their first year of lessons, and remains in first hand shape of tone-tone-semitone from each string. The cello part was adapted to avoid the slightly awkward F sharp stretch on the C string, which often leads young cellists out of tune. However, there is a second supplementary score and parts which use the original cello notes. Other supplementary parts include a fourth violin part which is all open strings, a viola part which doubles mostly second violin but sometimes first or third violin to stop the line leaving first position, and a double bass part. Minimum forces for a performance are the first three violin parts with at least one bass clef part (which could also of course be played on a keyboard). Inevitably, the piece loses its purity of being an actual canon of parts, but gains playability. It is almost as long as the original, but some cuts have been made, so it is inadvisable to add parts from other sources. Finally, the piece has been made much easier to read by being written in double time.

Bach composed many of his greatest organ works during this period. The music of the Fantasia is lush and ornate. The Fugue is an amazing 130 bars in length. This work was transcribed for orchestra in 1921 by Edward Elgar who mourned after the death of his wife. He was to orchestrate the Fugue and Richard Strauss agreed to do the Fantasia, however after two years Elgar completed the entire work as Strauss never held up his part of the bargain. Mr. Sauer has subtly added phrasings, breaths and articulations to the original score to aid in the performance for Trombone choir. The music is about eight minutes in length and is appropriate for advanced performers.

Vom dusteren Adagio am Beginn der Fantasie KV 594 uber das triumphierend auffahrende Allegro bis zum ersterbenden Ende wird der Horer gleichermassen wie in der entgegengesetzt aufgebauten Fantasie KV 608 von dem mit dramatisch-heroischem Impetus anpackenden Themenkopf uber das durch 2 Fugen von allerhochster Meisterschaft umrahmten innig beruhrenden Andante bis zum letzten Ton in Atem gehalten. War es die vermutete Bestimmung der Kompositionen als Trauermusik oder Mozarts Beschaftigung mit Handel und Bach, die so ungewohnlich ergreifende Musik entstehen liess? Gemeint sind die beiden ublicherweise als Fantasie bezeichneten Werke in f-Moll, KV 594 und KV 608, die Mozart mit grosser Wahrscheinlichkeit fur eine mit einem Uhrwerk verbundene mechanische Orgel - also einen Orgel-Automaten - im Mausoleum Laudons der Mullerschen Kunstgalerie geschrieben hat. Wer unter diesen so harmlos wirkenden Titeln eine ebenso harmlose, hubsche und unterhaltende Musik erwartet, wird schon durch die Tonart der beiden in Mozarts letztem Lebensjahr entstandenen Musiken uberrascht sein - vielmehr noch durch ihre konzentrierte Form und Ausdruckstiefe. Stucke fur ein mechanisches Orgelwerk zu schreiben war durchaus eine Aufgabe, der sich viele der grossen Meister des 18. Jahrhunderts unterzogen. Wir haben kostliche Miniaturen fur eine Flotenuhr von Handel, Haydn, Beethoven u.a., die heute in der Regel auf einer Orgel wiedergegeben werden. Umso verwunderlicher ist es, dass Mozart mit diesen beiden Kompositionen eine ganz andere Musik geschaffen hat: gross dimensioniert schon in der Ausdehnung, die der Lange eines Sinfoniesatzes entspricht, erst recht aber in ihrer inhaltlichen Ausarbeitung! Vom dusteren Adagio am Beginn der Fantasie KV 594 uber das triumphierend auffahrende Allegro bis zum ersterbenden Ende wird der Horer gleichermassen wie in der entgegengesetzt aufgebauten Fantasie KV 608 von dem mit dramatisch-heroischem Impetus anpackenden Themenkopf uber das durch 2 Fugen von allerhochster Meisterschaft umrahmten innig beruhrenden Andante bis zum letzten Ton in Atem gehalten. War es die vermutete Bestimmung der Kompositionen als Trauermusik oder Mozarts Beschaftigung mit Handel und Bach, die so ungewohnlich ergreifende Musik entstehen liess? Unuberhorbar ist jedenfalls ihre Nahe zu seinen letzten grossen Kirchenmusiken, der Messe c-Moll und dem Requiem! Wolfgang Helbich in seinem Vorwort zu den beiden Fantasien fur eine Uhr.

This Fantasia (or Fantasy) for piano, vocal soloists, chorus, and orchestra, Op. 80, was composed in 1808 by a 38 year old Beethoven.The Fantasia was hastily written to serve as the grand finale for a (personal) benefit concert on the 22nd December 1808 which included premiers of his 5th and 6th symphonies, the 4th Piano concerto and the Mass in C. Beethoven took the opportunity to use the forces available to make this comparatively short piece for piano, orchestra, and a choral finale where he, the soloist, could showoff just how good he was.Sadly, this work is seldom performed because who wants to hire a choir for just 2 minutes of music and an orchestra for not that much longer. This quintet version addresses this by allowing a much smaller ensemble to enjoy performing this utterly delightful work. The piano part is basically what Beethoven wrote, however it has been suitably modified in places to allow the piano to fit into the overall ensemble.
