Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.PDP101). 9 x 12 inches.Barlow's Prelude, Air and Variation, written in 1948, is the first twentieth-century work scored for the combination of bassoon, string quartet, and piano. There are earlier compositions from the Late Classical and Early Romantic eras by Johann Evangelist Brandl, Domenico Cimarosa and others. It is interesting to note that the other notable modern works for this ensemble are also by American composers, specifically Gunther Schuller and Elliott Schwarz. Barlow's harmonic language is much more conservative than that of Schuller and Schwartz, and he does not exploit the bassoonist's potential virtuosity as do the later composers. The work is notable for Barlow's melodic gift and the care with which he varies the harmonic underpinning, as well as the basic structure of the piece. It is a beautiful composition that never fails to garner compliments after it is performed.

The same calm, the same purityaux Cheveux de Lin from book one. Nature and innocence demand a spontaneous and laidback approach to those delicate and poetic riffs to match the colour and aroma of fragrant purple shrubs. Birds may be heard calling, accompanied by the distant refrain of a shepherd’s flute in this harmonious and homogeneous prelude — an admirable contrast to numbers IV and VI.In direct connection with this prelude, Marguerite Long mentions a Debussy souvenir pairing the scent of sea mist and coastal pines, and if she is correct this would take us to Arcachon in south west France. It is possible that the young composer first went there in 1880 with the baroness Nadejda Von Meck and later in 1904 when he stayed with the uncle of Emma Bardac (neÌe Moyse), his future bride.The pastoral and familiar poetry of a woodland scene where the earth’s pervasive scent mingles with the subdued display of patches in purple.— CortotA peaceful melody on a shepherd's pipe, resonating on the silent moorland. It was published in 1910 as the tenth prelude in Debussy’s first of two volumes of twelve piano preludes each. It is characteristic of Debussy in its form, harmony, and content.Arranged double wind quintet.Debussy indicates a meter of 6/4=3/2 on his piano original. His own recording plays all the quarter notes/crotchets in the 6/4 passages at exactly the same length as the half notes/minims in the 3/2 passages.I have done the same in this arrangement.In other words the beat/pulse remains the same throuhout the piece.

As a composer he is best known for the choral song Jerusalem, his 1902 setting for the coronation anthem I was glad, the choral and orchestral ode Blest Pair of Sirens, and the hymn tune Repton, which sets the words Dear Lord and Father of Mankind. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known.
