Thanks to the Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741), there exists today not only a wealth of magnificent violin concertos but also quite a number of cello concertos to whose development he contributed considerably. More than two dozens of his concertos are dedicated to the violoncello, including the probably most famous double concerto: the 'Concerto for Two Violoncellos, String Orchestra and Basso continuo in G minor (RV 531)' written after 1770. The sonorous work with its playful outer movements and expressive largo is published in this critical new edition on the basis of the sources.

This Trio Sonata is an arrangement of the first of the seven opus 1 sonatas for violin, viola da gamba & continuo composed in 1694. When most composers at this time would compose a trio sonata with all the movements in the same key, Buxtehude composed the movements of this sonata alternately in F major and D minor. The movements are: Vivace - Lento, Allegro, Adagio, Andante, Grave and Presto. Written for players of equal ability and of intermediate standard and above, the sonata has been carefully edited, additions are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines.Buxtehude was famous during his lifetime for his skill as an organist and composer. Both Handel and J.S. Bach travelled to hear him play (at different times). Bach stayed to study with him for three months. Handel departed after one night when he learned that Buxtehude (who wanted to retire) was looking for an organist to succeed him, a condition of taking the post being the necessity to marry Buxtehude's eldest daughter who was some years older than Handel.

German • English • French.The composition was composed in response to a poem written in 1992 by Karl Dietrich Hepp (Kaspar Damian Hosp under his pen name). The first letters of the individual movements of the string trio are H E P P: Halcyon, Ethereal, Pointillist and Perpetuum. The poem by K.D.H. was inspired by a photo of his father taken on a ski tour in 1931. Both, the poem and the photo are printed in the edition and everything adds up to a fascinating, artistic chain reaction. The diatonic material of the first movement in the composition by Waterhouse expresses optimism, energy and liberation. The 2nd movement is a study in pianissimo harmonics. The following 3rd movement is a pizzicato study in a bright and vivid harmonic tableau. In the last movement, a kind of Moto Perpetuo, the musical material continually transforms. Graham Waterhouse (*1962) was born into a musical family and has lived in Munich since 1992 where he is active as a freelance composer and cellist. He received his musical education at Cambridge University and at music colleges in Essen and Cologne. His works to date comprise mainly chamber music and instrumental concerts. Waterhouse performs as a solo cellist and in various chamber music formations. He has performed his own Cello Concerto in Toluca, Mexico City, Gorkij, Weimar and Baden-Baden.

Abel was born in Köthen,[3][4] a small German city, where his father, Christian Ferdinand Abel, had worked for years as the principal viola da gamba and cello player in the court orchestra. In 1723 Abel senior became director of the orchestra, when the previous director, Johann Sebastian Bach moved to Leipzig. The young Abel later boarded at Leipzig's Thomasschule, where he was taught by Bach. On Bach's recommendation in 1743 he was able to join Johann Adolph Hasse's court orchestra at Dresden where he remained for fifteen years.[3][5] In 1759 (or 1758 according to Chambers),[1] he went to England and became chamber-musician to Queen Charlotte, in 1764.[3][5] He gave a concert of his own compositions in London, performing on various instruments, one of which was a five-string cello known as a pentachord, which had been recently invented by John Joseph Merlin.[6] In 1762, Johann Christian Bach, the eleventh son of J.S. Bach, joined him in London, and the friendship between him and Abel led, in 1764 or 1765, to the establishment of the famous Bach-Abel concerts, England's first subscription concerts. In those concerts, many celebrated guest artists appeared, and many works of Haydn received their first English performance. For ten years the concerts were organized by Mrs. Theresa Cornelys, a retired Venetian opera singer who owned a concert hall at Carlisle House in Soho Square, then the height of fashionable events. In 1775 the concerts became independent of her, to be continued by Abel and Bach until Bach's death in 1782. Abel still remained in great demand as a player on various instruments new and old. He traveled to Germany and France between 1782 and 1785, and upon his return to London, became a leading member of the Grand Professional Concerts at the Hanover Square Rooms in Soho. Throughout his life he had enjoyed excessive living, and his drinking probably hastened his death, which occurred in London on 20 June 1787.[citation needed] One of Abel's works became famous due to a misattribution: in the 19th century, a manuscript symphony in the hand of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was catalogued as his Symphony no. 3 in E flat, K. 18, and was published as such in the first complete edition of Mozart's works by Breitkopf & Härtel. Later, it was discovered that this symphony was actually the work of Abel, copied by the boy Mozart-evidently for study purposes-while he was visiting London in 1764. Published by Annemieke Lustenhouwer (A0.1195919). What happens when you close your eyes and you see yourself standing next to Mother Mary when Jesus dies? What do you see and what do you feel? That was what I’ve been asking myself for years when I read the text Stabat Mater. This composition tells about this experience and this questions. Sometimes a motif tells quite literally about this story, like the moment when Jesus is nailed down the cross: first the right hand, then the left hand and finaly with one nail both feet. In the first part of the composition, the viola tells with sforzato accents about this.This Stabat Mater is not only an expression of the pain of the Virgin Mother, but is also a tribute to JS Bach as well. Bach is by some seen as a fith evangelist. Nowadays there are still a lot of people who are affected by how his music tells about biblical stories, like I am. In this Stabat Mater I use the number 5 to express that: the first part is written in 5/4th and the last part Quando corpus et Amen is written with 5 parts in the choir. There can also be found a reworked choral in the choir passages of  O quam tristis et afflicta. It is the choral Wie nahe mir mein Ende from BWV 166.Polyfony is a returning presence in this Stabat Mater. I had an visual idea about this. When I was young I saw in an exhibition a tapestry with all kinds of colours and threads, and everything felt in motion. It was a kind of organized mess, but it was beautiful and felt perfect. I wondered if I could manage to express this idea in music as well. Under one of the polyphonic passages there is a Latin-American dance rhythm to express that motion. I heard that rhythm in my childhood in a rhythmbox of the keyboard of my dad. Another passage has the baroque sarabande-rhythme underneath in the double bass.A lullaby-feeling in some parts of the Stabat Mater tells about another story that got intertwined with this composition. It’s the story of a mother who rocks her terminal dying little son in her arms. I once read that story and it felt connected with the Stabat Mater text for a long time. I decided to express that as well.This composition is dedicated to the Dutch conductor Geert van den Dungen. However I saw many conductors, while playing the oboe and clarinet from a young age, there was nobody who let me think very deeply about music. Geert was the one who changed that for me. I started to study scores and developed a great interest in music analysis and music psychology. Many moments of inspiration and understanding for this Stabat Mater happened on choir rehearsals and concerts where Geert was working.
