Dialogues With Ancestors is the result of working with tenor Rafael Montero, a native Latin American who founded El Parnasso to celebrate indigenous South American music. Dialogues With Ancestors is a dialogue between pre-colonial South American culture and contemporary Europe. The song cycle, for tenor and piano, takes us from Nature, through Love, Loss and Justice to Peace. Eleven indigenous songs are the starting point for an evocative duo between tenor and piano, beginning with Wik'unita, marking the wild exuberance of the South American lama, ending with the beautiful serenity of Kkochus al Espíritu Santo. The climax comes with Kkochu al Machula de Tuana, the angry god who seeks vengeance, met with the powerful plainchant Dies Irae. Dialogues With Ancestors will be premiered in Cologne on 4 October 2024, by tenor Rafael Montero and Ukrainian pianist Anastasiia Haisiuk. Duration 20'. Scored for voice and piano. The clarinettist Irith Gabriely was inspired by her love of Barbara Heller’s Dialogues (for violin and viola) to arrange these duets for two Bb clarinets. The result is a set of varied concertante dialogues that present clarinettists with a few challenges, requiring stamina, breath control, intense and contrasting dynamics, chromatic passages, whole tone passages, sensitive tone production, leaps across wide intervals, fast playing, disciplined rhythmic control and listening to one another closely. In this edition all tempo indications and dynamic markings are intended for guidance: these duets may equally well be interpreted in other ways. This edition therefore also includes a second section where all the pieces are reproduced without such markings, ready for individual interpretation. The Dialogues lend themselves very well to chamber performances; they are also short enough to serve as brief interludes at readings or exhibitions. Their expressive qualities, brevity and range of musical and technical demands make them highly suitable material for youth music competitions. A flute or oboe might well be played with the clarinet as alternative instrumentation for these duets (ED 22017).

Published by Distant Engraver Music (A0.977049). Elements of this music can be traced to jazz, blues and classical music, but it’s not really crossover or fusion. It doesn’t sound like jazzy classical music and it certainly isn’t jazz hoping to be serious or grandiose. Its seemingly disparate impulses blend logically into a work that feels natural on its own terms. So when the saxophone plays syncopated melodies or bent pitches, it just sounds like the right thing to do. Similarly, though the inspiration for certain guitar sounds and effects came from electric-based fusion or more serious-minded rock music, those influences are probably not obvious. Of course, guitarists will bring some of their own concepts and experience into their sounds, too, but general guidelines are given on the score. The three movements of this piece are:

Dance de Confusion Confluence is the name of a place in Lyon where 2 rivers flow together: The Saône flows into the - at least in German - female Rhone. In French, however, it flows into DEN Rhone - Le Rhône. This confuses the composer: How do rivers get their gender, are they sometimes male, sometimes female? Is it because of their character, because of the landscape that they flow through? By their water, even by their fish? On the people on their shores? A real confusion ensues. In the subsequent thoughts about music, the composer discovers certain analogies and asks himself the question: does gender-typical music actually exist? Or instruments? Typically male harmonies or rhythms? Or clearly female melodies and the way to interpret? The 3-movement composition is dedicated to this question and meanders like a dance in the bed of the converging streams. Colorful modal harmonies form the bed for wide arcs of melody. A varied, recurring theme sets the direction and creates a bubbling, dancing pull in the direction of the mouth: dancing finale! 1st movement: Deux Characters In the first movement (Andante) the roles are distributed - the Sâone and the Rhône get their performers. A first glance at the ensemble reveals a tendency: woodwinds take on the female lead, the male brass the counterpart. The two drummers each support one of the two poles in solidarity. The assignment may be obvious, but strong doubts remain in the final chord of the first movement. 2. Dialogues: In smaller and larger dialogues, there is a lively exchange and the properties are worked out and further developed. But it is also increasingly being copied and imitated, even maliciously agitated and aped. You try to convince each other, interrupt each other, both sides increasingly flare up, it gets louder and more hectic, louder and louder, too loud, until communication stops: in the end, you just yell at each other! 3. Dance de Confusion The resulting confusion finds a conciliatory end in the third movement of the composition: Let's dance! Deux Caractères 2. Dialogues 3. Dance de Conflusion Confluence heißt ein Ort in Lyon an dem 2 Flüsse zusammen fließen: Die Saône mündet in die - zumindest im Deutschen - weibliche Rhone. Im Französischen mündet sie aber in DEN Rhone – Le Rhône. Das verwirrt den Komponisten: Wie erhalten Flüsse ihr Geschlecht, sind sie mal männlich, mal weiblich? Liegt es an ihrem Charakter, an der Landschaft, die sie durchfließen? An ihrem Wasser, ihren Fischen gar? An den Menschen an ihren Ufern? Es entsteht eine veritable Konfusion. Bei darauf folgenden Gedanken über Musik entdeckt der Komponist gewisse Analogien und stellt sich die Frage: Gibt es eigentlich geschlechtertypische Musik? Oder Instrumente? Typisch männliche Harmonien oder Rhythmen? Oder eindeutig weibliche Melodien und die Art, zu interpretieren? Dieser Frage widmet sich die 3-sätzige Komposition und mäandriert dabei tänzerisch im Bett der zusammenfließenden Ströme. Farbenreiche modale Harmonien bilden das Bett für weite Melodiebögen. Ein variiert wiederkehrendes Thema gibt die Richtung vor und erzeugt einen sprudelnd tänzelnden Sog in Richtung der Mündung: Tanzendes Finale! 1. Satz: Deux Charactères Im ersten Satz (Andante) werden die Rollen verteilt - die Sâone und der Rhône erhalten ihre Darsteller. Ein erster Blick auf das Ensemble lässt schon eine Tendenz erkennen: Holzbläser(inne)n übernehmen die weibliche Hauptrolle, das männliche Blech den Gegenpart. Die beiden Schlagwerker unterstützen solidarisch je einen der beiden Pole. Mag die Zuordnung auf der Hand liegen, so bleiben doch starke Zweifel im Schlussakkord des ersten Satzes. 2. Dialogues In kleineren und größeren Dialogen wird sich munter ausgetauscht und werden die Eigenschaften herausgearbeitet und weiter entwickelt. Aber es wird zunehmend auch kopiert und imitiert, gar boshaft agitiert und nachgeäfft. Man versucht sich gegenseitig zu überzeugen, fällt sich ins Wort, braust beiderseits zunehmend auf, es wird lauter und hektischer, immer lauter, zu laut, bis die Kommunikation erlischt: Man schreit sich schließlich nur noch an! 3. Dance de Conflusion Die entstandene Konfusion findet im dritten Satz der Komposition ein versöhnliches Ende: Lasst uns tanzen! So wird schlussendlich aus der anfänglichen Confusion eine Conflusion: Es fließt und tanzt zusammen, was zusammen gehört. The three movements of this piano quintet share a common element contained in the seed of a motivic idea—the interplay between the minor and the major 3rd : a tonal ambiguity or conflict of the minor 2nd. Stylistically, this Sonata pays modest homage to neo-classicism of 20th Century composers such as Poulenc (I), Prokofiev, Shostakovich (III), and perhaps even a touch of Gershwin (II). I hope this piano quintet will offer players and their audience chamber music that is a bit unusual yet worthwhile. The Sonata embraces the lightheartedness, the melancholy , and the whimsy of nostalgia. There is no separate piano part.Performance Notes:I Moderately fast, expresses dialogues of themes that move between piano and strings. The playfulness of the exposition (repeat is not optional) can give way to a more passionate building of the development to the climax at letter H. In the recapitulation the longer bridge remains steadily in tempo (no accelerando) relaxing just before letter N and theme two. The coda after letter O is a somber premonition of movement two.II Slowly, the bowings are ad libitum. The viola is chantlike and smooth. Violins glissando like the portamento of the Chinese stringed instruments, the Guqin or the Ehru type glissando leading to a very pure quiet long tones without any vibrato and the resulting fourth should be a pure tuning. The piano can use una corda ad libitum in softer passages, and the pedal (damper) ad libitum. In the B section (Letter D) pianist should treat the 64th notes like an ornament (upper mordent). Strings play the eighths after Letter G accents with strong bow changes. At the end, the piano lingers until the sound vanishes after the strings die away.III Introduction: Quick and spirited, the transition (Introduction) is measured and strict without alteration leading to letter A. The rondo theme, ‘A’ section, can slightly intensify in each successive repetition, but not slavishly. The small waltz or ‘B’ section, Letter C, the quartet might play to resemble a reed organ or harmonium—sweet, sonorous, and harmonious. The ‘C’ section, Letter G, big swell on short bridge passage, then pizz. strings become very rustic and like a peasant dance. Pianist can use una corda ad libitum in soft passages. Violins again after Letter I play similarly to non-vibrato of 2nd movement. The ‘B’ section at Letter L is now the grand waltz slightly faster and more indulgent with tiny rubatos tastefully allowed.James Albert Yeager (b.1946)James began his career as organist and choral conductor then harpsichordist and finally, professor of sacred music. As an organ major at The Ohio State University, he studied with Dr. Wilbur Held (B.Mus. 1969). Professor Joseph Goodman mentored him in composition at Union Theological Seminary in New York city (M. Sac. Mus, 1971). At the University of Colorado-Boulder, he returned to the organ, nevertheless, keeping composition as a mainstay (D.M.A. 1985). He was appointed Director of Sacred Music at the Pontifical College Josephinum (Columbus, Ohio) and rose to the rank of Professor (1984-2009). He retired as professor emeritus in 2009 and moved to New Mexico. While residing in Mountainair, New Mexico, he was organist/choral director for 12 years at a major Albuquerque church retiring again in 2021. His most recent compositions include Passacaglia & Fugue for Organ and Chamber Orchestra (2022), a Fugue for Piano and Orchestra (2022), a Sonatina for Flute and Piano (2023), and the Sonata for Piano Quintet (2024) as well as several smaller works for voice and piano.

Section II is a retrograde variation of Section I. The work has a slow tempo and uses the overtone scale, an octatonic scale, starting on note G ( G-A-B-C#-D-Eb-F-F#-G) . The piano is the lead instrument of thematic events and it dialogues with various timbres of percussion instruments. In most of the work sequences of measures are explored, progressing alternately every two bars. Also are explored harmonic intervals of 5th., 4th., 3rd. and 2nd. Many of them have developed their unique stylistic expression and zest with sorts of articulation, which are not to be completed by those of many Western instruments. The composer has long been delving into the characteristics of these traditional instruments, attempting to ferret out further musical meanings from different formal and aesthetic angles. Searching for Cheng and Orchestra, commissioned by the Cheng player Hao-Yin Huang, was originally a solo Cheng piece. It was completed in mid-April, 2005, and was premiered in the same year at the 25th meeting of the Asia Composers’ League held in Bangkok, Thailand. The composer later expanded it into an ensemble piece for Cheng and orchestra, trying to integrate different timbral characters of the Eastern and Western instruments within their dominant-subordinate interactions and dialogues in the piece.

The waltz I ended up with is not really meant for dancing, but rather used as a way for storytelling. This story, however, is one of my own fabrications but is still loosely based on the Atlantis mentioned by Plato's dialogues: Critias and Timaeus. This piece outlines two Atlanteans that, with the end in sight, decide to dance one last waltz together as their gleaming city collapses around them. It's a tragic farewell to a utopia that once was and could've been, but remains now as only a memory – a relic lost at the bottom of the sea.

The composition was created in classical style for 5 players and 11 instruments: C Flute, Clarinet in Bb, Sleigh Bells, Castanets, Triangle, Snare Drum, Glockenspiel, Wood Blocks, Slapstick, Piano and Violoncello. Tempo Moderato, dance-rhythmical figure, alternating short phrase with a long ones, presence of various percussion makes character of music a kind of choreographic. Composer's intention here was to involve every instrument on variety of its traditional functions, techniques and registers, using them in several ways as accompanied or unaccompanied, melody and harmony, polyphony and dialogues, building a different structures and textures.
