Score only (see 729537 for Parts) Duration: 8 minutes, 19 pp. Description: When John Cage first invented the concept of prepared piano it was an invention born of necessity. (To realize his ideas Cage needed a percussion ensemble to accompany the dance troupe with which he worked. His solution to the impracticability of this was to create various percussion-like timbres from the studio piano which all dance spaces have.) In Heisenberg... all the instruments are engaged in a music made up of sound effects and unusual timbres; but because all the effects, in the case of the string instruments, must come from a limited number of strings, the preparation of these instruments are mutable — throughout the piece the performers are constantly preparing and un-preparing their instruments. This principle of mutable preparation has been carried over to the piano as well and thus the performance takes on the characteristic of an alien dance as a great deal of the work involves the logistics of setting up each succeeding phrase. Werner Heisenberg's great contribution to modern science is the Uncertainty Principle — the realization, expressed mathematically, that even in the hard sciences of physics and chemistry one could never be sure of anything. (According to The New Columbia Encyclopedia) “Werner Heisenberg — German physicist. One of the founders of the quantum theory, he is best known for his uncertainty principle, or indeterminacy principle, which states that it is impossible to determine with arbitrarily high accuracy both the position and momentum (essentially velocity) of a subatomic particle like the electron. The effect of this principle is to convert the laws of physics into statements about relative probabilities instead of absolute certainties.†(He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1932.).

Key: Eb minor.Horace Silver had not seen the insides of a recording studio for 750 days before laying down Silver 'n Brass. His previous record, In Pursuit of the 27th Man, was unusual in its instrumentation (vibes) and for including a number of non-Silver tunes. (But the cover of Liberated Brother, from that record, did go on to become the backbone of his late 70s live shows.) So, as a prolific composer, Horace had a large backlog of tunes at his disposal as he entered the studio in January, 1975 and the 6 cuts on Silver 'n Brass are among his best. Horace broke the sessions into two: a straight-ahead post-bop session with Ron Carter (whose chubby bass spews artifacts all over the place, in his best late-70s style) and Al Foster on drums and another, more commercial session featuring Bob Cranshaw and Bernard Purdie. Wade Marcus later added horn overdubs employing an absolute who's-who of LA session players. (Word quickly got out among the cognoscenti, and Silver 'n Brass became hugely popular among fellow musicians, much to Horace's delight.) Highlights of the disc include: the composer's propulsive piano solo on Dameron's Dance, young Bob Berg's paint-peeling tenor solos (especially riveting on Kissin' Cousins) and the driving flat 9th chords of Adjustment. The tune Barbara, a gorgeous waltz dedicated to Horace's then-wife, has become a latter-day standard of sorts (Amazon's MP3 store lists a whole bunch of covers). Sophisticated Hippie, a tribute to Duke Ellington, features quite a rhythm-section workout in its closing vamp: this session would be the only time that Horace and Bernard's paths would intersect. There are no vocals this time out, just fully arresting post-bop of a high order.

At the turn of the century (20th to 21st century, for you music history buffs) Igor Korneitchouk and Chad Mealey formed the group touch me hear with friends Dennis Aman and Jim Soe Nyun, and, with technical and musical assistance of various music faculty and students of San Diego Mesa College, presented concerts of new conceptual music/conceptual art/performance art. (The taxonomy and distinctions between such categories can be debated; we leave it to those who like to create new theory to follow our new practice.) The group was dedicated to the idea that such new music can and should be presented to an appreciative yet unsuspecting audience that rises to the challenge when put to the test. Indeed, a major feature of many of the works exhibited relies on the performance by the audience to entertain us and themselves. Thus, down comes the fourth wall. If you truly listen, as John Cage would encourage, the conceptual can sound just as fascinating, the visual display just as spectacular, the serendipitous theater just as dramatic, as the idea is imaginative. “Music is all around us, if only we have ears...†(to quote John Cage). Here are some of the original works of those concerts. Ironically, one in particular dispenses with the idea of an “audienceâ€. It is the tree that falls in the forest (or desert) no one hears. Duration: 10 minutes, 16 pp. Description: In speaking of his recitation of his Four Quartets on phonograph, T. S. Eliot says: A recording of a poem by its author is no more definitive an 'interpretation' than a recording of a symphony conducted by the composer. The poem, if it is of any depth and complexity, will have meanings in it concealed from the author; and should be capable of being read in many ways, and with a variety of emotional emphasis.... Another reader, reciting the poem, need not feel bound to reproduce these rhythms: but, if he has studied the author's version, he can assure himself that he is departing from it deliberately, and not from ignorance. The composer could not have stated his intentions towards this piece better than to quote T. S. Eliot. No note or inflection is fixed in stone that it cannot be negotiated, changed to better suit the needs of the performer. This is especially true of the first movement which is composed around sections of the first of Eliot's Four Quartets (Burnt Norton), but applies generally to the whole piece. Much of the notation in this piece is meant to be suggestive. The performer may take a highly faithful approach to realizing the score, or consider the movements as models for directed improvisation. Movement 2, for example, asks the performer to continue to improvise in like manner, yet maps out a clear design for the music. Birthday Suit is dedicated to Robert S. Howe, a friend and obstetrician who welcomes into this world many people in their birthday suits. That is the most obvious reason for the title of this piece. A reason more germane to the music itself is the piece's reliance on the performer's own natural body rhythms (such as speech rhythms, involuntary eye movements, and rate of breathing) to help organize the flow of the music. In this way both metabolism and the written note cooperate to make music. There are three movements, Rhythm of Speech - Rhythm of Sight - Rhythm of Breath. Total 10 minutes. Nonetheless, despite their common genetic heritage, the three brothers all have radically different personalities. SerapeÌ No. 2 is called Burro for its loping cowboy-swing. Its seemingly infinite upward-spiraling progression through succeeding tonal centers reminds one of the mules on the switchbacks of the Grand Canyon. SerapeÌ No. 3, Starry Night, employs one of Korneitchouk's favorite devices of combing complex order out of chaos. Overlapping melodic patterns in 7/8, 8/8, 9/8, 10/8, 11/8, and 13/8 emerge -- three at a time -- out of constellations of apparently random notes. The brutal SerapeÌ No. 5, L.A. Smog, is rude. This SerapeÌ starts as a sonorous block of jackhammer intensity that later reveals itself to be in a very brisk 5/8 meter. In contrast, SerapeÌ No. 6 is the most peaceful and static SerapeÌ. It includes a musical portrait of the composer's refrigerator turning itself on and off in the dead of night. A drone, which suggests the 60-cycle hum of the refrigerator, anchors the subtle shifting and overlapping harmonies of the piece.

This piece consists of an arrangement of the very well known first Prelude, in C major, from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I by Johann Sebastian Bach followed by two variations, the second quite long, utilizing only the notes and patterns supplied in the original. The first variation rearranges the sequence of patterns from the right hand of the clavier part in relation to the sequence of patterns from the left hand. The second variation very gradually stretches the voice-leading of individual pitches out of context with the unfolding harmonies, thus revealing a new side of Bach as an early minimalist composer!

A moderately easy piece for the flutes, and an intermediate level classical guitar part. Here it perfomed by Bradley Powell featuring GIlberto Hildavio performing the alto and bass flute parts. The Alto flute part, Bass flute part, and guitar part are all included here (the optional keyboard plays chords off the guitar part).Gilberto Hildavio was a flute student Luella Howard, principal flutist of the 20th Century Fox Studio orchestra in Los Angeles. Hildavio has played woodwinds for many leading shows in Los Angeles (including Sunset Blvd, Fiddler on the Roof.), and performed with many musical stars, including the Percy Faith orchestra. ABOUT the composer: Brad Powell (aka The Candlelight Guitarist) began guitar at age ten, inspired by The Beatles. At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso, and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs. Brad also played as the solo guitarist for Disney's Princess Breakfast Adventure at Disney's Grand Californian Resort by Disneyland (March 2019-January 2024), providing music for the Disney Princesses (Belle, Tiana, Jasmine, Rapunzel, Mulan, Aurora, Ariel, Pocahontas, Cinderella, and their friends and guests).

Horace broke the sessions into two: a straight-ahead post-bop session with Ron Carter (whose chubby bass spews artifacts all over the place, in his best late-70s style) and Al Foster on drums and another, more commercial session featuring Bob Cranshaw and Bernard Purdie. Wade Marcus later added horn overdubs employing an absolute who's-who of LA session players. (Word quickly got out among the cognoscenti, and Silver 'n Brass became hugely popular among fellow musicians, much to Horace's delight.) Highlights of the disc include: the composer's propulsive piano solo on Dameron's Dance, young Bob Berg's paint-peeling tenor solos (especially riveting on Kissin' Cousins) and the driving flat 9th chords of Adjustment. The tune Barbara, a gorgeous waltz dedicated to Horace's then-wife, has become a latter-day standard of sorts (Amazon's MP3 store lists a whole bunch of covers). Sophisticated Hippie, a tribute to Duke Ellington, features quite a rhythm-section workout in its closing vamp: this session would be the only time that Horace and Bernard's paths would intersect. There are no vocals this time out, just fully arresting post-bop of a high order.
